I don't think she thinks. I'm pretty sure I've seen that quote word for word in one of my Mom's Christian study guides.

Yes, it is true Christan's say this and you will see it many times a day. No, it is not true that Christianity is not a religion.
Christians are deceived into believing religion is wrong and sinful but James wrote in one of the chapters of his book named after him that if a man seemed to be religious but did not bridle his tongue his religion is in vain. In another verse the same James described what pure religion that God accepted was.
That saying that Christianity is not a religion is against bible teaching.
All religions teach to have a personal relationship with their Deity. I am Wiccan and have a personal relationship with the Goddess and God, but Wicca is still religion and so is Christianity.
People think this makes them appear special. It just shows how Little they actually know.

Edit:
No splitting hairs about it. if Christianity is not a religion, then way so many Christians sr in the religion and spirituality section? HUH?

She is right just put it wrong. Christianity is a religion in it's self. But it is not being religious that matters or is even good. Do and dont's etc. what matters is your personal relationship with Christ. I have known people who were very religious but didn't even really know Christ. When they saw they started to seek God much more and grew in Christ.
Just like when you are married. You may know your partner and even and have some form of a relationship but you don't really share and know them deeply. You will find in time of not really having a deep relationship your marriage will start to fall apart and you both grow away from each other instead of closer.

What she was probably was sayings is that Christianity is not really a religion; it is a relationship with God. It is trusting in Jesus and what He did on the cross for you not on what you can do for yourself. Christianity is not about ornate buildings, flamboyant preachers, or traditional rituals. Christianity is about truly accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
But using the traditional definition, " a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices," yes it is a religion as well.

Religion is a group of people who follow a group of rules such as you can only were dresses or no make up (these are just examples I am not targeting a specific group of people). Also people who are good at dictating what the bible says but bears no fruit of actually living it. A relationship with christ is to talk with him, to desire to live according to his ways because its what is truely in your heart. Relationship is to want to live right and not look right. Some people just give good lip service but unfortunately its not truely what is in their heart they just want people to think it is. There is truely a difference in having a relationship with God and being religious.

splitting hairs here on yahoo answers are we? lol. religion is the belief in a set of policies and rules that churches, synagogues, etc. use to run their denomination. Christianity is called a religion, but the point she was trying to make was that being a "true Chrsitian" has nothing to do with religion or churches. It is a personal trust, Faith and belief in Jesus. Hope that helps, thanks and have a great day!

I would agree with that statement, religion is different from relationship. Religion is just going through pointless motions and practices, but a relationship is actually knowing someone and spending time with them.

Your last sentence did not make sense.
She was saying that to be a Christian you have to know Christ, and have a relationship with him.
