I have a 1998 Ford F150. The check engine light came on. I had it scanned and the code that came up was P1780 (transmission control out of range). What does this really mean? Is my truck going to get any worse?

Not enough information, but let me look into my crystal ball and lay out what was done... And what wasn't done.

P1780 is a FoMoCo proprietary code and the verbiage is in fact "transmission control switch out of self-test range". This DTC can only occur during a KOER self-diagnostic. 99.9% of the time, if you see this DTC, it's because when the KOER self-diagnostic was run, the TCS was not cycled as required. Simple.

The troubleshooting procedure for this is quite easy, however if you have no transmission related driveability issues, you can be assured that it was just that the TCS button got missed. My guess is that the steering wheel didn't get turned 1/4 turn and the brake pedal probably wasn't pushed either. Oops.

p1780 Is NOT!!!! a proprietary code. My VW just threw this code. Look at the other codes, fix first. My fix was the MAF sensor. Replace it, Trans code went away and it shifts properly. Parts store, Autozone, Advance will NOT have an answer for you :(

Many different problems can come from that description. It may even be a ffaulty TR (transmission range) sensor causing the TCM to think that its not in the gear it should be in. The TCM may also have a faulty wire internally that is causing the PCM to read it incorrectly.
