You misspelled "curious", but I was going to let it slide.

As long as I can read the letter, what is a misspelling or two (if it is chronic, that is another matter)

They are here, I can see and avoid them. That's it for me

I try not to belittle people, but I can't stand it when someone is criticizing someone else and can't spell or write correctly. LIke, you misspelled "curious," for example, and there should be an apostrophe in "let's," never mind the "belittle people." Although you gave a definition of "belittle," you didn't note that it's a verb, not an adjective, and that's how you're using it. Do you want me to ignore that?
Misspellings and grammatical errors give the impression that the person isn't very smart. Now, why should we care about the opinion of someone who's not very bright? If you want to make your point, you need to seem like you're somewhat intelligent or nobody will care about what you have to say. Good spelling and grammar give that impression. That makes sense, right?
I agree with you, Shelcom, but "misspelled" isn't supposed to be hyphenated.

"curious" is incorrect. And your statement
"spelled incorrect" is not correct. It should be "spelled incorrectly".

Well, you DID ask for correction!

Sometimes people ask ridiculous questions, and so deserve to be belittled for it. Sometimes people have every other word misspelled, to the point that the question is not readable.

Still others tell these really long stories, all misspelled, without a comma, or a period, or making new paragraphs. Do they expect other people to make sense of that sort of mishmash?

Did they sleep all the way through their English classes, or what?

I have no personal interest in belittling people. People who are rude and nasty are just that; rude and nasty. Who cares why? And why give a rat's hiney what they say?

I do, however, have an interest in trying to read the English language. I am the worst speller in the world and make constant use of both the dictionary and spell check.

When you misspell words, the reader only sees the misspelling and none of what you are trying to say. Your thoughts and opinions become invisible and invalid because you have stopped the reader dead with misspellings and other grammar faux pas.

I would like to hear what anyone has to say, but don't make me have to guess your meaning by making lazy spelling and grammar mistakes.

When expressing yourself, you want to be as clear as possible. Spelling words incorrectly causes your statements to be unclear. It also reflects somewhat on the intelligence of the person doing the writing.

I try not to belittle people when they make a spelling mistake, but it is really hard not too when you see a ten word sentence and half the words are misspelled (especially with spell check available). It reflects the writer's disregard for his audience. Like a singer singing a song who doesn't care if the audience understands it or not.

When people belittle others, I think it makes them feel better about themselves. As far as the spelling police, I somewhat understand where they are coming from because all the spelling errors annoy me, too. However, this is not school or some important assignment, so I say give it a break!!

I don't like to belittle people. I really don't. But when someone spells a word incorrectly, I say to them, "hey, there's a G in that word" or something. Not in a rude way, just to help out.

What really bugs me is when people mispronounce words. I correct someone when they are saying a word incorrectly, because I figure, hey, if you keep saying it that way, people are going to laugh at you! I do it to help people not look stupid. If I was saying a word wrong, I'd want someone to tell me the proper way to say it!

I've never meant to make anyone angry over it, or anything like that

ALSO- how many people do you think were more careful than usual when they were typing up the answers to your question? :)

If people would realize it doesnt matter how they spell it and concentrate on the question it would be much better...I find the ones who just have to correct someone are anal and usually dont know what the heck they are talking about...as far as the belittlers...these people are sad, they feel they have to belittle everyone to make themselves feel good about themselves...when the truth is they usually are pathetic low self esteem individuals that are more interested in others than helping themselves...sad...
I ignore most of them...it would be sad to be either of them if you think about it...they are there own worst enemy, and show their stupidity to the public trying to put others down...and showing only them selves as the fools they are...

They are there to try and slow the pace of the disintegration of our language and culture. Maybe they think that by belittling poor spellers they may be shamed into using whatever little brain with which they were born, or, at least the spell-check in the computer program they are using.

You spelled "curious" wrong. It's not "the belittle" - it's "they belittle" Did you know that Yahoo Answers has spell checking? "Lets" should be "Let's" - I could go on - your punctuation and grammar are a mess - but I'm sure you get the idea.

oooh!
a FAVOURITE issue of mine!
I have an iq of around 180 - i have studied discourse analysis, psychotherapy, epstemology and omg knows what else!!!
i am also a way good 'speller'!
people who correct people are playing out their own issues - if you want a really tech' explanation it's an attempt, by the perpetrator, to put the recipient of the criticism into a child like ego state by acting out their parent ego state(google transactional analysis for a comprehensive explanation of that).
you've got to understand how messsed up these people are and feel pity! i willfully, as a uk guy, i spell 'programme' as 'program' just to see if i can tempt any of these arseholes out! (program is the original latin spelling that was 'frenchified' in an histoprical era that thought ALL things french were cool! it's fun to watch someone who professes expertise realise they know so little!!!=P)
seriously? ALL spelling is merely historical convention..as is pronunciation and meaning, even. kinight used to be pronounced ker-***-er-ty and nice used to mean something...well google the etymology if you're interested.
forget the 'belittlers' they have sooo many problems! spel it lyke you lyke and enjoy your freedom from the 'cultural police' who are only mirroring their primary care-givers attitudes to THEIR 'mistakes'. and pity them - that **** came up from some REAL trauma, huh?
