I'm looking for a way to hang a sheer fabric 30x40 poster in a dorm room without doing any permanent damage to the wall. Any suggestions/insight would be useful.

I will give you a tip from one of the most beautiful interior designed room I ever witnessed. A close friend's home that was once owned by a woman who is very wealthy. She took a fabric she truly loved. In her case it was a silk shantung, but it doesn't have to be a rich fabric. Get a 1 x 1 tackboard like strip, that will reach across the room. Staple the fabric to the strip on the wrong side, turn it over and tack the strip along the top of the wall just below the ceiling. Then staple the bottom of the fabric to the strip on the bottom and tack that to the wall. Then she used a small 1-1/2 inch crown moulding and base moulding to cover the strip at the ceiling and floor. It worked beautifully. Looks like the fabric was glued to the wall, and she took the same fabric and covered a chair and the headboard in the room. The room was once featured in House Beautiful many years ago, and I saw it recently after 30 years. IT looks just as beautiful today as it did when I first saw it. Good luck.

Maybe stitch a seam at the top so you can insert a thin rod, you know, like the dowel rods. then attach a string to each end of the rod and hang in the center by a hook. Just an idea

You frame them and you get some double faced stickers for the frame (this if it's not too heavy).

If you pierce the wall with a nail you can fill the hole (when you leave the dorm) with chewing-gum and them put a bit of color on it.

I was just suggesting :D

fun tack the stuff teachers use to hang poster on the wall or there is also hook you can use that have fun tack like stuff on the back that just peel off when you want to remove them and no marring on the walls.

Only thing I can think of it to hem top and bottom, insert a wooden batten so it stays square and then attach picture cord to the ends of the top batten. Then hang to one single screw in the wall.
