“Cholo” is, in general, applied to people of mixed American Indian and Spanish ancestry.

Depending on the country the meaning changes a little.

It’s important to know that this word is NOT used in every Spanish speaking country. It was originally used to refer to children resulting from the union of a Mestizo and an American Indian, that is, one who had ¼ of white blood and was ¾ Indian.

In Mexico and in the US, it refers to American people of Mexican descent (the so called Chicanos).

In El Salvador, “cholo” means “large”, “big”.

In Peru and Bolivia, cholo is a common word to refer to people with more Indian than European blood.

The word is also used in Ecuador with a similar meaning.

In Argentina and Chile it is used, however, as a pejorative term to generalize someone who is "low class," predominantly Amerindian appearance.

In Chile the term is used almost exclusively to refer to Peruvians and Bolivians. It is usually intended as an insult.

This is in general how the word is used, in other Spanish speaking countries it’s never used and it’s not even understood.

A cholo is a derrogatory term for a hispanic person, I believe it's used mostly in Mexico, who is also of Indian decent (Indian like a native of the country not from the country India). It is derrogatory because it's referring to the fact that their Indian decent makes them of a poorer class.
