I was brought up catholic but I am an athiest now (for about 10 years). I go to churches for weddings & funerals etc and some friends & family 'say grace' and I bow my head, do the sign of the cross, even take the eucharist if I feel like it. I don't know why I do, I don't believe in god AT ALL.. I guess some people dont like to draw attention to their beliefs if they are different to others. Yes I guess we are 'leading them on' but does it really matter??

I still give respect to everyone else's religion. Of course, they don't give it back but that is another story. I bow my head when they pray, I will go to a church wedding or service if it pleases my wife, friends, parents etc. Remember, I think that what they believe is a fantasy. It would be the same with a child and Santa Claus. I won't piss on a childs joy about white beards and reindeer.

I see nothing hypocritical about not throwing your atheism in any ones face. That said, when questioned about it, I respond proudly about my atheism. Also, I will not hesitate to discuss it. Remember that reality is on your side. They may have God. Reality is .... well .... real!

Good Question, a star for you.

Me (and finally my sister) have never been enormous on spiritualism, and that i replace into thinking approximately it lots for a on an identical time as, and desperate i replace into atheist (or not less than agnostic) i think of all Christians could agree that usually Easter is the main severe Christian trip, so that's common which you dont have a good time it. Christmas, even although, fairly those days incredibly is a commercialized trip that now represents family contributors togetherness, being a stable guy or woman, giving, and "etcetera". the main severe element so which you are able to do to have a good time is to not point out non secular issues, do not bring up faith until eventually extremely asked, and if asked, stick along with your ideals! dont get indignant or accusing, basically tell them you're celebrating this as a mundane (not non secular) trip, and in the event that they're stable family contributors, then they're going to at last pass away you on my own. fi you in basic terms persuade them that it's not an element and that's the type you sense (be arranged to grant a reason or 2), then they're going to pass away you on my own approximately it. stable success, and Merry (eventual) Christmas!

I am willing to bow my head out of respect for my family and their religion, BUT I never close my eyes or say Amen. I am willing to go only so far out of respect. I believe everyone should have a choice in what they believe, and everyone should be accepting/ respect other people's religion. Therefore while I will not close my eyes/ say Amen, I am still willing to bow my head (not to the imaginary god but out of respect for their beliefs)

And to answer your question... no I do not think it is leading them on... you are respecting their religion. But I seriously think you should consider telling your family, and stop keeping the secret from them. It is only fair for your family.

Nice question... here's a star for you ^_^

I bow my head but keep my eyes open. For some reason this makes me feel like I'm being true to myself while being respectful of them.

I used to until I told them I was an atheist. Now I just stand there quietly while they pray.

I will take my cap off at a ball game, or sit silently at the dinner table. I don't close my eyes, nor bow my head.

My husband does. Hell he did it at our wedding when his cousin burst into prayer. We both rolled our eyes and dropped our head. Its just not worth the blow up. It takes nothing to do.

No, because most of my family are atheists. Anyhow, why don't they NOT bow their heads with respect for you?
