It appeared immediately after a popsicle stick hit that spot. It was normal before. It doesn't hurt except if I try to drink from a straw, and it has been there now for several years. It is close to an inch long and points to the back of my throat.

The center of the maxillary palate is the cartilage of the nasal septum, the area is the mid palatal suture that expands during the growth process.
Maxillary tori are usually found bilaterally on either side of the septum and are a bony, smooth, over growth of bone. It may be that you hit this suture area where the bones adjoin with the popsicle stick and you noticed it and have been more conscious of this ridge ever since. Some patients ridges as well as tori's are more prominent than others, this could be why you continue to traumatize yours when you try to drink from a straw.
This should be something that your hygienist or dentist would have noticed, and mentioned if a problem existed. If it bothers you, point this out at your next visit to eliminate any possibility of a problem or at least get their advice on it. I hope I've been of some help and good luck!

If you had it for as long as you remember then it is noting to be worried about. It is called Torus Palatinus (latin), and it an anatomic variation of otherwise healthy palate. There are also mandibular tori located on the lingual side of the lower jaws (called Torus Mandibularis in latin). The only time that it will be a problem would be if it got irritated often (as in case of drinking straw hitting it to a point of irritation) or if say in the future you would be getting a removable denture (which could not be designed around your torus) then a surgical excision will be indicated. Otherwise don't worry about it and enjoy your life. In order to validate my suggestion see a dentist and get a second opinion.

Could be something called a maxillary tori. However, tori are generally not pointed, and would not appear because of injury. Have you gotten your teeth cleaned recently? If you have had it for several years, then I am sure if it was something of concern your hygienist or dentist would have said something.

THE FULL HAME FOR THIS THING IS THE TORUS PALATINUS, OR PALATAL TORUS (single).
SOME PEOPLE HAVE ONE AND SOME DON'T. IT'S ONLY A PROBLEM WHEN SOME FULL DENTURES ARE MADE WHEN IT HAS A MULTIPLE ARRANGEMENT.
