Officially, it's Hindi. But it depends on who you're talking to an where you are in the country. Bengali is the language with the most speakers, but less than half the total population knows it well enough to converse intelligently. Hindi is the language of the upper echelon, the educated. English is widely used, but the dialect is different than in the U.S. and they usually only speak a simplified level of English in India. If you go around Mumbi (formerly Bombay), most people speak Gujarati. Also notice that Urdu, the language of Afghanistan, is almost the same as colloquial Hindi.
