BBQ tongs, a candy cane, rope, some liquid Jesus (moonshine), some good running shoes and a cape.

It is not a "catching" but rather a receiving.
It is different than being saved. A separate event in a believers life. Paul said to believers " Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed and they responded -no. He layed his hands on them and they began to speak in tongues.
Tongues is a prayer language given to us by God to strengthen our Spirit. It is the least of spiritual gifts. Why is there very little power being displayed through the Church is because the Church is not even moving in this, the least of the gifts that God has given us. I thank God that I pray in tongues. Non believers go ahead and give this a thumbs down but believers I ask you this. If you ask God for a piece of bread - will he give you a stone. He who has ears let him hear what the Spirit is saying.

The Bible speaks of many gifts of the holy Spirit - wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirit, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues.
A person with the gift of speaking in tongues need not necessarily understand the interpretation of it. It is in a different language.
One cannot "catch" the Holy Ghost. He is a helper that Jesus left when he ascended to be the Father.
In essence, the Holy Spirit is the third person in the trinity.
Also remember, that is ok to not understand a certain faith, but blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is one sin that Jesus mentioned as unforgiveable.

First, so you know, its not "ghost"; it is a mistranslation. It is "Holy Spirit".
You have a problem in that Church. If someone is talking in "tongues", it better be a language that every single member present can understand perfectly, with no need for interpretation.
If there is one note of it that you all cannot fully understand, IT IS NOT OF GOD.
And the "fainting" part, is equally as suspect.
I smell a whole bunch of fakers.
Evidence of the Holy Spirit speaking thru
a person is the complete understanding of it,
as God is not the author of Confusion.
That is the role of Satan; I suspect either you have a snake in your congregation, or a whole bunch of people who are trying to show the others that they are one-up, or closer in their walk with God than the rest of you.
Personally, it would have been the last time I would have entered into that Church, and I
am a devout Christian.

They are not possessed by the holy spirit. It is slain in the spirit two different meanings. When you see people usually fall backwards which is a different manifestation then when they fall forward (they are face first). What you are seeing is the divine touch brought restoration to full awareness to enable them to receive God's Word or instructions and to act on them.
It is a gift that was given to us all. Some act upon it others turn their back upon it. Ask and it shall be given. It can be a little off setting when you go in and do not understand what in the world is going on.
As always,
Seek,Learn,Discover, Love,

If you truely want to receive the Holy Ghost you need only ask God for it. It is a gift that he wants you to have. Scripture says in John 7:37 if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. First you must thirst for it, then you need to go to him and finally simply drink (receive it). Be blessed! Depends on what denomination you are in, actually.
Most mainline churches would say that the gift of tongues is either (a) limited to the day of the early church as a sign of the apostles or (b) not very instructive or useful in current church life. Many Pentecostal churches, however, still believe speaking in tongues is a valid gift or manifestation of the Holy Spirit. They often equate it with a "second baptism" (after their initial Chirstian conversion experience) that brings them into a deeper, closer relationship with God.
You "catch" it basically by simply connecting with God through prayer, being faithful in your attendance in worship and following Christian teaching. Some Pentecostals never have the experience, some do... it is usally considered a "gift" of the Spirit that comes at the will of the Spirit and not some "extra credit" one gets for being a good Christian.

I have seen people speak in tongues at a church too but I don't believe that was a true church. If you read in Acts, I think the 2nd chapter when the Holy Ghost allowed them to speak in tongues it wasn't just a bunch of jabbering. It allowed them to speak so each person could understand them in their own "language".
If you are at a spiritual gathering where the spirit is present God can speak to you in your mind even if the speaker is not speaking your language.
I don't want to offend anyone who goes to church where they speak in tongues, this is just what I think.

Tongues are faked quite a bit in church these days, you have to have discernment to be able to determine which is true and which isn't. I would suggest that the one that sounds most like a language is true, and not the repetitive shundai, shundai, mumbo, jumbo that people spew. Tongues is something that happens when you have prayed so much and so hard that there are no more words, and the Holy Spirit at this point begins to pray through you....

Bonny,
Read 1 Cor 13 and 14, I am a student of prophecy and of gifts and in my opinion these 2 passages give the best answer to this question of gifts of the Holy Spirit.
As for the Holy Spirit and when you catch it, I have heard a lot about the 2nd work of salvation of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. But I tell you this Ephesians is the other passage that is specific to the works of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believerespecially the 1st chap verses 1 thru 14 key verses 13-14. "when you first believer you were sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. Who is a deposit guarenteeing our inheritance". That is a pomise my dear that is in line with the Gospel promise of romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus for it is the power unto Salvation..."
God makes it impossible to conjur up in ourselves a place before Him, but He indeed imparts a blessing of Himself in us when we believe and accept His Son and the message of Salvation from sin in Christ. That blessing is in the form of His Spirit (read 1 Cor 2:6-16). Given to us freely, as preached by Jesus in the parable of son and fathers.
A boy asks his father for some bread, and does his Father give him a stone? He asks him for a fish and Does he give him a snake? I tell you true, that even you ungodly men here on the earth know how to give good gifts to you children, how much more is your Heavenly Father God willing to give the Holy Spirit for those that ask of Him for it. (my paraphrase)
I hope this note helps, I have spoke in toungs, and I have been slaine in the Spirit, but I tell you this (with excitement I might add)
If I were to look at you and say:
"Eee kanna moe shan tada, parda shant moe kieva tantada",
or if I were to fall down and lay down on my back and stare at the roof (surrounded by whitness all around me by the way and the quietest quiet I have ever heard, in a room full of oh...maybe 100, loud, worshiping people)
Now of the things I have writen to you so far, which do you think would be more beneficial to you in your quest to understand the Holy Spirit better? (Hmmmm....)
"But we have the mind of Christ" 2 Cor 2"16b :)
God Bless and the peace of Christ be upon you
Al for now B

I don't know that everyone speaks in tongues when they receive the Holy Spirit. I didn't and I can tell you the moment that it happened.
