I'm a guy and at two restaurants in the last month, I'd order a coke or something at the bar and when Im about to get seated with my friends and I go back to remember to pay/tip them, they smile and say "Don't worry about it"........

Why?

What innuendo?

And it wasn't just a tip it was paying for the drink altogether.......

What do you mean? I wasn't even flirting?

Badlydrawngirl, you sure you're not a man? Really, because you look like a glorified trannie in your "mugshot".

Maybe you looked like you needed a drink..

or maybe you smelled bad.. and they just wanted you to go away?

I think I'll go with the second one.

Well, perhaps the bartender was flirting with you. Not all gay/bi men are "sissies" you know.

Also, handsome/pretty people make the bar look good - so having a few pieces of eye-candy about is good for business.

Finally, many alcohol bars don't charge much - or sometimes not at all - for soft drinks. This is especially true when you come in with a party of 5 or 6 etc. and are expecting to eat a meal etc.

When they say, "don't worry about it." you're perfectly welcome to say "Hey, you work for a living too - Really. I insist." and leave a couple of bucks on the bar.

Many places don't allow the bartender to accept tips. Depends what country you're in and also what the policy is at individual bars. Also, if there was any innuendo on your part, they may have declined because of that.

Hmmm, I get that quite a bit too! Doesn't it feel iffy when that happens?! I reckon it's mostly because coke only costs like, a dollar and it's not worth the trip to the cash register so he'd just put it on the house. Big smiles, bartender!

It's hard to say, but when I go out with my husband to the karaoke house he likes to sing at, he orders beer for himself and I order Coke. They never charge me for the Coke because I am considered a designated driver, since my husband has ordered beer. They do this even though they don't know if I have chosen to drive. That could be the case for you as well. If your friends are drinking alcohol and you are not, then if you order a soda and/or a light appetizer, they will often not charge you in order to say thanks for being understood to be a designated driver.

Many bartenders will do this as a customer service gesture, so that you will com back and give them business (and a tip)again, and you should. I bet it worked (you remember the act, right?).
This happens alot with opposite genders, by the way.
Have a good one!

Alot of times,Bar's will give free soda's to designated driver's...
Maybe they thought you were a dd because you were only ordering a coke...Trust me,,they will make plenty of money on the alchohol they sell....A coke,or two will not hurt them.

Are they guys or girls? They may like you and hope you take the kindness as a hint to buy more and leave a good tip. I would still at least tip them even if they refuse it.

Sometimes a bartender gives out free drinks to the DD,
or maybe they thought you were hot.

If it was just a coke I wouldn't charge either
If it was a drink-they probably dig you
