sounds pretty much right. we had a dual carriageway near us resurfaced last year and now they'r ripping it up again. and its always holiday time when the roads are already rammed.
and in their infinate wisdom, our city council had decided to use a cheap road surface on the whole city, but its been banne din most places cos its too dangerous! they said it'll be fine when it wears in. when it wears in it'll need replacing!
i'm ranting now...

Roadworks can last any length of time - usually between a day and 3 weeks, depending on the work to be carried out. If there is a building project going on it can last years - last summer a major building project started near where I work, it is scheduled to be finished and the road re-surfaced in 2009.
How long it takes for the road to fall to pieces again, depends on how well the road was done in the first place. The last time the road where I live was re-surfaced was 25 YEARS ago, and does NOT require re-doing yet.

In the UK the roads are a mess, here in Edinburgh they have been neglected for about 100 years and now they are trying to fix them all at once, there are hold ups and road works on almost every street. I think the rest of Europe, esp. France, Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia have a much better record on maintenance.

Road work can take from days to years if they are repairing but building road considerably longer, but when they're finished they last, we have one road we call the Foss way and that was built by the Romans 1900 years ago although there wasn't any traffic light then.

Same here and the workmen stand around most of the time drinking tea instead of fixing the road.
