definitely initials FML first middle last in an old english or Roman script and the date of the wedding.
i used to work at Things Remembered and we engraved tons of stuff for wedding gifts to the bridal party. The guys always picked knives or money clips and engraved initials and a date.
it looked classy and memorable.

I think thats a wonderful idea! i've never heard of knives as presents, btu really its almost the best idea i've heard of!
Someone had suggested doing your engraving FLM (first last middle)... i think thats appropriate for girls and bathroom hand towels. For men, its a little more appropriate to go with a less cursive script, a little more blocky... and you can do first, middle, last initial, or even just their complete name.
It woud be great to put the date of your wedding on tehre, but i woudl also consider this: if these knives end up meaning somethign to these gentlemen, then they may use them and carry them around, and pass them down to their sons and grandsons... by the time they get passed down, the date is going to be a funny thing to have on them... maybe just attach a card to the knives thanking them for their friendship and support, and willingness to be with you on this important day.
good luck, great idea!

Yes! Hubby got our groomsmen pocket knives, and we engraved each guy's first name.

My husband did this for his groomsmen he had their first names engraved on the one side of the blade and either "Groomsmen" or "Best Man" engraved on the other side. They looked really great and the guys loved them

I would definitely personalize the gifts. You could just put "thanks for being a part of our special day" or something cheesy like that. I would probably add the date also. I'm not too good at this sort of thing, but it does seem appropriate to engrave something in the gift.

I would def. engrave them with something. you could do any of the following plus the date of the wedding:
*your catch phrase
*a quote
*initals
*a nickname for each groomsman
Making them special is important

Possibly the date, nothing else. My HTB says that it's kinda girly to walk around with stuff that has your name on it. Now that he mentions that I havn't noticed many straight men with personalized things.....
He also said to tell you that many men old enough to be groomsman already have swiss army knives...he has 2. His and his dad's. Apparently they do pass them down so bonus there...he suggest something called a Gerber knife (hunting and fishing?)

probably their initials or something in that style where its FLM (first, last, middle with the last initial being a little bigger than the other first and middle initials)...that way its personal to each groomsman
