I know it is a massive culteral divide.
In the UK where I was brought up, anything under 5 years old is seen as barbaric.
Now in NYC I see babies 6 months old with little earrings.
My daughter is 2.
Maybe I will wait until she can decide for herself.
What are the general thoughts out there on the matter??
thanks xx

to 'e'. I am not talking about heels and make up.
I am not trying to attract men to her! Ear piercing is not done to attract men. Not to anyone I have ever known, but thanks for your opinion.

To Kathy C: I don't think you read the question properly. I was asking for everyone's opinions, I actually was looking for a variety of responses, which I have received. tar.

I don't have kids yet, but I've decided that when I do, I'll wait until they are old enough to (A) decide on their own that they want it, and (B) understand aftercare and be able to take care of it and clean it on their own.
And this is coming from someone with 11 piercings!

while i replace into seven, lots of my friends have been getting their ears pierced. Ask her if she needs to pass lower back and get it completed, and that it will not be so frightening this time, considering which you will tell her basically before time what is going to take place. possibly you will desire to tell her what to anticipate, so as that once it happens she's greater calm. tell her that she'll pay attention a clicking noise, that's while they're putting the earring in the piercing gun (that's advisable to return up w a distinctive term for it; "gun" sounds slightly intimidating.) Then, she has to hold very nevertheless and that they're going to make the hollow and placed the earring in on an identical time. The sound would be like a noisy click, louder than previously, and it will sense form of atypical. Then they do the subsequent ear. it might in basic terms harm for approximately 5 minutes after she gets it completed.

I have 3 daughters and am from the UK also.... I live in Utah now, and have seen a lot of baby's here with their ears pierced. I have to say that it IS barbaric!!!!! These Americans think it so cute to put holes in their little baby's ears.... It makes me sick! My youngest daughter is 17, and they weren't allowed to get their ears pierced until they were 18!!

personally I think that when a child is old enough to say "I want my ears pierced" and help take care of them, is a good age. so about 5 years old. I use to pierce ears at my job and we could do it as young as 2 months if the baby had their 1st set of shots. and it wasn't all girls getting them done either!!

Well, I was 5 years old when I got my ears pierced, but my parents didn't force it on me...I chose for myself. I actually asked my mom if I could get my ears pierced and she agreed so I got them done on my 5th birthday as a present.
:o) I'm not sure what my thoughts are.

As long as the piercing is done at a sterile and liscenced salon then any age is safe. If your daughter does not like having her ears pierced then she can let them close and gte them pierced again later if she changed her mind.

I grew up in America, and my folks made me wait until I was 12 years old to get my ears pierced. I think that I agree with their outlook on the matter. They said when I was old enough to decide, and take of it myself, then I could get my ears pierced. We aren' super religious or anything like that. I just think that one of the problems that we are facing as a society today, is that little girls are being aloud to dress up like grown ups. They are wearing make-up and high heels and mini skirts. This to me is not okay (no I'm not old either) I think my parents were right in making me wait for things like dates and ears pierced and make-up. These are things that should be age appropriate rights of passage, not something for little girls (it just makes them look like little prosties).... Just my opinion.

I think waiting until they can decide and they can understand it will hurt. My girl is 4 and she decided she wanted it done so I explained what they did and that it might hurt a little and she waited two months and said she was ready. She didn't cry a bit and since she decided to do it I maker her take care of them and she is doing great!
