I don't worry about speed. Speed comes the longer you play. If you practice your scales and go faster and faster, it should come. But lots of players use speed to cover up lack of melodic concept ("Wow, it will sound really cool if I play real fast", instead of "God, that was a beautiful solo." Tricks and speed will never be a match for musical knowledge and feeling. Fast may sound exciting, but find somebody who can play slow but just as intense, and whoa!!! You will know what I mean

First of all you did't say how long that you've been playing, and that is important ! One of the reason I find that people who want to play faster and can't is because their self taught. The number one reason for not being able to increase your speed believe it or not is your probably not holding the guitar right, when students ask me why they can't increase their speed is usually is because their not holding the guitar right, I bet your not puting your thumb in the middle of the back of the neck of the guitar, correct ? Your hanging it over the top ! This tends to hold most students back, and it's takes a long time to brake old habits, the same goes for complicated cords, students will wonder why they can't make them and it's because they can't make the barre correctly because their left hand it not held correctly. Practice is another thing but I'm betting it's the way your holding your hand on the guitar, go on youtube and watch a guy named Peo Kindgrean, he plays everything from Beatles to Bach, watch when he plays the fast Bach pieces and where his thumb is, it may sound silly to you but it makes the biggest difference in your playing, expecially speed. You may be able to correct this, it all depends on how long you've been playing this way. Try to start over a little at a time, start with scales and see if doing it my way increaces your speed, it won't happen over night just try it for a while, take a C scale all over the guitar, and work on it for a week and see if your speed increases with your thumb in the back, see if it doesn't make the biggest difference ! Hope this helps.

the only way I know of to increase speed is , yes, PRACTICE. However, using a metronome will help push you and gradually get faster. You might also consider hand and arm exercise before doing your practice. You can find suggestions by doing a search on the web. Good luck.

Practice, specifically practice with a metronome.
Do scales and runs, but push the metronome a beat or two faster every few days, as needed.
That kind of discipline is what it takes to get fast.

Of course, practice is an obvous answer, and, is quite true. But the missing part is that fast playing of ANY style or genre of guitar playing is that the musician plucks the string in BOTH directions, effectively doubling the rate of play.
