by means of the thumbs up/down barometer, it is easy to summate that the general concensus is pro gay marriage.
How many people here realize that this is the result of conditioning that has been imposed upon us by the media?
The TV shows we watch, the movies we see, and the so-called "fair-and balanced news" have all been subtly conditioning your thinking to come into allignment with this conclusion?

Truly, 35 years ago, when I was a kid, there was never a hint of this choice in the media.
Of course, that was back when TV shows actually had themes and plots.
Now that we have been relegated to "reality shows"(ya right) and the news journalists have abandoned professionalis for a more "folksy" approach, we also have the undercurrent of, "gays are born that way" invading every avenue of the media.
Sorry gays, while I belive you have the right to choose for yourself what to do, I will never concede that it was not a "choice".

As for the intolerance accusation? please see details. I am totally not intolerant. Why? Because whether or not I approve or disapprave is irrelevant to each person's choice.
I am totally in agreement that each person has the total right to choose for himself. Yet, on the same token, the intolerance comes into play when people who object to a viewpoiint that does not suit them, they accuse the other of intolerance.
I am not intolerant, why? because I know that my view will never stop a person who has rationalized the gay choice to change their mind. Just as, the person who has rationalized any choice out of harmony with God's will, will not change their mind.

You know what people?
I truly appreciate all the responses.
Why? Because you people are more full of p iss and vinegar thatn the worst fundie!

You know? I truly try to see the opposing viewpoint, it is called "empathy" yet you pro gays do not seem to have any!
You must be the ones to replace the intolerants of Christendom in the near future, short though it will be.

Short and to the point:

Yes you are completely right. The world that we live in has been trying to condition us to this "way of life". Sadly many are growing up thinking that being gay is ok, and with parents that have no time for their kids, leave it to the schools to educate them on this matter. And of course the schools go with the flow, and call it an "alternate lifestyle".

Quite sad really.

You're right. Years ago this subject was not something discussed openly. I'd say it was sometime in the 1980s before I realized that many of my friends and coworkers were gay. Maybe I was just really sheltered, but I think it was more the outward manifestation of the mind of the community at large. But once gays and gay advocates started speaking out, it made us all more aware.
I have no idea whether gays are really "born that way" or "choose" to be gay. No more than I know whether my cranky and annoying friends (who I love "anyway") were born that way or are products of their environment.
Presenting another viewpoint is not mind control, as you are implying. Those who are willing to allow for the validity of something they formerly didn't consider are being given a new choice. If you don't like the possibilities, you might call it mind control. I call it allowing for the expression of our individual human dignity in whatever way we can each best manifest.

how many people realize that being against gay marriage is the result of conditioning by media and religious groups?

Do you know any gay people? They are just like everybody else, I am sure there are nasty ones, but there are also very nice people. Actually nicer than most Christians. Why would you deny them civic rights? Any logic reason? Isn't there supposed to be a separation between church and state...

P.S. tolerance for intolerant views is not a virtue. If your views cause you to treat some people worse than others for no good reason, you need to be corrected, not rewarded.
I am sure you'd yell very loudly if somebody else takes one of your possessions just because they reject the idea of private property...you wouldn't be tolerant of their view point.

No. Even when I was little (as in VERY little, 5 or so) I never saw what the big deal was about gay people. My parents were very conservative and I never saw any gay people on TV, I just saw a few in real life and never got what the fuss was about. It seemed normal to me and I never knew people had a problem with it until my mom started complaining about this gay couple at the park.

And I still think it's normal today. Besides, marriage isn't a religious insitution. It's a legal one. Marriage does not require religion in the U.S., anyone from Buddhists to Christians to atheists can marry so, religion should play no role in whether or not gay people can marry.

No, the media has nothing to do with it. I'm for gay marriage because I feel that no one has a right to determine who one can marry. I also find the arguments silly. The sanctity of marriage? Really? It doesn't take a man and a woman to make a marriage sacred. It takes each persons commitment, trust, honor etc. Gay people are just as capable of making a marriage sacred.

Actually, I think for myself, and I have a good heart. It is my conclusion after much introspection that if gay people want to live together forever in happiness it would be horrible to say they couldn't just because they were gay. Perhaps you're the one being conditioned, by your clergy or whatever.

It is too bad that you do not understand how ridiculous religious arguments against gay marriage are. You blame the media for promoting realism and fairness, and do not blame religion for promoting hatred and bigotry.

Gay marriage will ultimately lead to one final conclusion......gay divorce. Can you handle that?

BTW, it's nice to se you have decided gays are not born that way and you refuse to change your mind, despite all the advanced research taking place that is indicating otherwise. How very Christian of you.

No, I was "pro gay marriage" before it was sensationalized in the news. I know a lot of people who felt the same before it was a hot topic.

You're wrong, and profoundly so.
