I tested the outlet and it said it was wired backwards. I put a new outlet and wired it the opposite way and it reads ok now but still sparks and throws the breaker switch. Some of the other outlets in the house are also wired incorrectly but can't figure out why the new tv works in the bedroom and not the living room???

First, you have a great need to make corrections to every appliance that is connected wrong. Any appliance that is "polarity sensitive" will have problems with your line voltage wiring. Let me explain: Any receptacle that is wired "backwards" means that the hot wire is on the neutral terminal and the neutral or ground is on the hot, or positive, terminal. This causes the neutral wire to become a hot wire and feedback occurs as energy is fed to the appliance. It also means that if you are bare-footed and wet, walk by the refrigerator and touch it with your bare hands, you may learn the full meaning of "eternity" or "afterlife"! Fix that first, then move to the second possibility. That is, if your TV is new, it could have a direct short caused in abusive handling by the shipper or transportation company.
My advice: Call a licensed electrician and have the system corrected and wired with the polarity in sync at every receptacle. Beware: this is a life or death issue.
