What if I have records filed and criminal charges filed against me and I don't know about them? Even if I didn't do anything, maybe there is something wrongly filed against me? Should the police contact me if there is something like that?

If you are charged with a crime, you have to be served a Summons. That usually comes in the form of a citation ticket from a police officer. It can also come as a legal document from the District Attorneys Office if the charges were filed later. Either way, you have to be served. If you are on the run, then they can still indict you but they will have to find you obviously before you can go to court. Call your courthouse where you believe you may have committed a crime and ask the clerk if there are any charges filed against you.

You can go to your local law enforcement agency and ask for a copy of your criminal record. You may have to pay a fee. It's not unusual as some companies require that you allow them to see such a report.

You can get a report that simply says you have no criminal record. They do this all the time at state offices when people get passports.

Also, if you did have any offenses before the age of 18 you may ask to have them removed if they still appear on your record.

"Every one makes mistakes." So, one way would be to join the military; if you are selected for intelligence, J.A.G. or any field requiring a security clearance, they will find out everything about you.
Another way would be to try to marry a foreigner; it's amazing how much they will delve into your life!
There are also websites, similar to www.annualcreditreport.com, where you can check your criminal record, your medical record, your employment record. I have never used any (except for credit reports), so can't tell you much about them.
