"Sweetheart" There are citizens that speak many many many other languages BESIDES Spanish (dozens, in the U.S. as a matter of fact), so take YOUR close-mindedness elsewhere. While you're at it, you can have a colonoscopy to check the same thing.
It is not right or fair to cater to ONE (1) foreign language and not all. What about Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, French...a whole host of languages. Use your brain.
It is discrimination and NOT FAIR to provide special concessions for one foreign language and not all. We should provide for all...or none...

My mother is 85 years old. She was brought up on a farm and went to a one room schoolhouse which had grades 1-8 in the same room. Even though my ancestors had been here since the early 1700's,at home they spoke Pennsylvania Dutch,a form of German. When she started school, she knew a few words in English. Even though the majority of the students that went to that school spoke Penna Dutch, school was taught in English only, since that was the language of the country. The kids either learned it,or flunked out. No one was catered to,there were no special language classes, the teacher taught at a steady pace and they were expected to keep up. The same should be done today.

I am fluently bilingual, an american citizen (white- gringo) that was an exchange student in Mexico in high school, and, fortunate enough to go back several times for months at a time.
I am currently, and have been employed as an interpreter along with my other social work duties. The philosophy is this: if a child is abused, reports need to be filed, suits need to be filed, and, the responsible party needs to be jailed. In situations where everyone in the family only speaks Spanish, if we need to talk to the children to find out what is going on in the family, we need to know Spanish. If there was no one that spoke Spanish, criminals would be set free to abuse more children.
And, FYI: In my recent certification for court interpretation there were over 20 different languages being certified. The most prevelant was Spanish, 2nd was somalian (8 being certified), 3rd was Armenian, then, Asian countries. Interesting to me, too. I had never really thought about all of the other languages in our state.
Ok, go ahead, give me thumbs down for a valid point, because you don't like my career choice.

Not just illegals but all of the Spanish speaking population. I don't like the way it is forced into our American culture. I don't mind people speaking another language but don't force it on other people. I don't understand why they are here either. They demand a lot of things but we don't get anything in return. Our govt keeps giving in. My friend had to learn Spanish to teach at a school in L.A. Isn't it suppose to be the other way around? The students come to school so that they learn English? I think the whole bilingual education crap has gone way too far due to political correctness. The govt doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I think our govt is way too soft. We need a leader with balls.

I am at a loss as to why we are so busy catering to the Spanish speaking part of our population.
We have had many legal immigrant populations flood our gates of various nationalities at various points of time throught America's history.
These immigrants worked their way into the fabric of American culture.
They did not demand or expect anything to be given to them or for anything to change because they chose to grace us with their presence.
They came to America because they liked what they saw in America and wanted to be a part of it-
Not because they wanted to send some money back to home Western Union. If they sent money home it was to pay for the rest of the families voyage an documents to enter America.
AT NO POINT IN TIME- were entire public (pd for by everyone regardless of native tongue) entities (schools, post offices, county hospitals, welfare offices, courthouses and DMV) required or even asked to staff someone who spoke a language other than English.
AT NO POINT IN TIME- did they march in our streets and burn our flag
Sometimes people can be just so damn self serving- thankfully there is still more of us than there is of them.
We can always take back America one block at a time.
Ms. Jeter:
Considering the behavior of past immigrant groups and the current behavior of our illegal alien populus- I think closed minded would be better suited to describe people who refuse to temper their culture to mingle with ours.
We have always spoken English in America-all over America in every corner of America
Spanish or any other tongue- never was and shouldn't be now
if our Spanish speakers had some manners and weren't so close minded they could learn a new language.

Press two for Spanish tells it all. If those that think that being a bilingual, English/Spanish, it a good thing, and both English and Spanish will be equal just come to Miami where bilingual really is defined as Spanish is the first language and English if spoken at all is broken at best. Another thing that makes me mad is that the very Spanish speakers that demand press two for Spanish, come from countries, such as Cuba and Mexico that have written in their constitutions that Spanish it the official language, and all documents will be in Spanish

Sweet! I completely agree with you. It makes me so angry how we cater to them. Where I live they have a translator in each classroom and they just hired one for the courts. Our tax paying dollars are paying for this. To make it worse they never get pulled over because the cops say it is to much paperwork since they are illegal. I can 't even go to Wendy's now without them screwing up my order because they can't understand English. Then when you go inside the printed orders have to be spoken to the cooks in Spanish because they can't read it. There are illegals here that have been here for 6 years or more and can not speak one word of English. We have problem finding places to rent because now landlords charge $100.00 per person to rent instead of one flat fee. Mexicans have no problem squashing 15 people in a 2 bedroom home so they are making tons of money.
Then.................you go to groceries stores now and the canned foods are in Spanish. To make matters even worse the town I live with we had no crime 6 years ago and now we have had 3 rapes, burglaries, robberies, and theft all being Hispanic. Most of them can not be found because they are illegal and can not be tracked or they run to Mexico. Ugh I could go on and on and on.

I feel the same way. Why are my children required to pass a foreign language class in order to gradute? When my ancestors came here from Germany, they learned to speak English and became citizens. And why are we catering just to the Spanish speaking people? We don't put "press 1 for French" on any recording for the Canadian immigrants who speak French! WTF! What is htis country coming too?!

I totally agree with you! It's ridiculous when illegals get more rights than what American citizens do. They get all the benefits, and guess who's paying for it-the American people. Also, the government needs to hurry up on completing the fence on the border.
