Tartarus - the angel who presides over Hell (or a term for hell itself). The angel, usually Uriel or Tartaruchus, is in charge of the torments of the nether regions, as already noted. For the names of other angels of these regions, see Angels of Hell. See particularly entry of Duma(h), who is "prince of Hell" and "angel of the stillness of death."

I ask this question because yesterday there was a question on the forum http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnjJJs1uPJiPEnn0HywTjdXsy6IX?qid=20070719190215AAKBsdh&show=7#profile-info-8c21901f1ceff458aaee34639d61afa9aa that brought up Tartarus. From reading the text in my book of the angels I stated that Tartarus is another name for hell.

Does or doesn't the text word for word from the book say that Tartarus is another name for hell?

I just have to know if I am reading this correctly.

Tartarus, in Greek mythology, was the name of the Bottomless Pit where Zeus flung the Titans to rot for eternity once he overthrew them. It was a part of the realm of Hades, which was considred the afterlife in Greek Mythology, but does not equate to Hell as all greeks went to Hades, some to the beautiful Elysian Fields and some to darker places that might be considered "hellish".

I see that the name 'Tartarus' is close to the astrological word 'taurus' and the 'age' before Christianity, most of the religions were bull-taurus- oriented and the Christian religion is known to have taken some of the pagan traditions and incorporated them into their own...ie-'Beelzebub' is one of the names for their anti-God, Satan....I'm assuming it would be n surprise that any taurean related character would be associated with evil
When Christianity took over, it was the start of the Pisces age-' shall call you 'fishers of men' the symbol for Christianity is the fish, many of the disciples and Jesus himself, were fishermen,; in the first story where he gets his first two disciples, they were fishing
there are numerous references to astrology in the Old Testament; if you're Christian and that offends you, it shouldn't. Genesis even has a line about God putting he stars in the sky to send messages, The stars were extremely important to everyone b/c that, if nothing else, was where they got directions to go anywhere.
