Before people start answering with things like "Because a nun chooses to be a nun, and a Muslim women is forced to wear the Hijab!", Muslim women are NOT forced to do anything. It is her choice to wear the Hijab, and she doesn't do it for her husband; she does it for the sake of her religion and to express her devotion to Allah. The Hijab is worn to preserve modesty, and is in NO way oppressive like many non-Muslims enjoy believing. Why is there a double standard when it comes to Christianity and Islam? I mean, no one dares to question the Virgin Mary, who is depicted with her body fully covered, including her head! Please watch this 1-minute video, its only one minute, so please spare your time.

It is a matter of religious conviction. The New Testament teaches that women should keep their heads covered. It also teaches that a woman's long hair is her "glory." Muslim women are required to keep most of their bodies covered, especially their heads. The difference between Christianity and Islam is that in the former it is a matter of choice whereas in the latter it is mandatory. That is why non-muslims have such a hard time with the apparell muslims must wear. Westerners were shocked by the images of muslim women and girls being beaten in Afganistan simply because their veils slipped below their faces or eyes. I have seen muslim women in the heat of summer at an amusement part dressed from the tops of their heads to their feet. Only their eyes were visible. And they were running around in the heat, dressed in those clothes, running after their children while their men sat under a shade tree in short-sleeved shirts. I wanted to go up to those women and tell them "you're in America now. You don't have to do that here. You can be free if you want to be." Ofcourse I didn't. But I sure as hell wanted to.

A woman that wears a hijab is not a weak minded individual. She understands and respects the teaching in the Quran and Sunnah. She proudly represents Islam to the world. The majority of the Muslim women that I know are well educated and wear the hijab defying the stereotype that we are uneducated, backward and just do not know any better. These ladies are business owners, teachers, lawyers, nurses, PhD researchers, masters and PhD students, doctors, and engineers and wear their hijab. It is not done because their husbands or fathers told them that they had to. No it is for piety and modesty. These are strong independent women that I am proud to call my friends.
Three Misconceptions About Hijab
Hijab is a symbol of ‘male dominance’
If you think Hijab is an act of submission, you are right! It is a way to submit to God. Like any other act of worship, the rewards of Hijab come only when it is done for Allah alone.
Hijab is a ‘cultural thing’
From remote villages to cosmopolitan mega cities, women all across the world, from every ethnic background, wear Hijab. Do all of these women cling to old cultural practices? Hijab, the internal and external aspects, take understanding, training and determination. Since the purpose of Hijab is to please Allah, doing it for tradition is wrong.
Hijab is a ‘challenge to the political system’
While Hijab may have political implications, as evident in the banning of Hijab in certain countries, Muslim women who choose to practice Hijab are not doing it to challenge the political system. Islam encourages men and women to observe modesty in private and public life. Hijab is an individual’s act of faith and religious expression.

If every Christians were to follow what according to Holy Bible to cover the head of women and shave off if uncovered, there would be no differance with a Muslim women. However in Islam, wearing a Hijab is her choice and there is no punishment of shaving off if uncovered. The double standard is Media and ignorance of religions.

Omer's got the best answer. For all you doinks who say Muslim women are forced into it... They are not.
They may be forced into it in Islamic nations that have adopted the Sharia Law. --Key word MAY.
Sadly many sisters have given up the habit for secular clothing because they believe this lie that to live your faith is to be oppressed.
People in general claim there is a shortage of religious (those living the consecrated life) but this is NOT so in convents, cloisters and motherhouses where the full habit is still worn. In such places they are busting at the seams with women looking to become consecrated.
Even as a Christian, my faith is bolstered when I see a Muslim sister out there in either her hijab or even the full burqua. I have only seen the burqua once in my own town. She was a dear, sweet lady.

Wearing hijab or secular style is mostly because of societal upbringing, secular family usually brings up the children with secular mindset, training them to wear miniskirt etc. Why don't people accuse the seculars of forcing their children to wear miniskirt, but hijab wearers are indiscriminately blamed. We must talk about character of society; religious society is following religious dress code that Blessed Mary was one best example in this regard.

Pictures are decieving...looking on the outside? God looks on the inside. Does what you wear make you holy? Did men of the sect in Jesus day not wear their garments to make themselves look better than others in regard to spirituality. Man made religions are a question. Is it really so, as it appears?

It's all a matter of opinion. Personally I see nothing wrong with any woman who chooses to cover, via hijab or otherwise, as long as it IS her CHOICE, not forced on her by cultural standards.
