to be honest, i don't think our 'nation' should be one or the other, persay.... i think each person should make up their mind... that is why we are a 'free' country, because we are not forced to be what one group believes is right. I dont want any government ordering my beliefs

In 1947, the U.S. Supreme Court decision Everson v. Board of Education incorporated the Establishment Clause (i.e., made it apply against the states). In the majority decision, Justice Hugo Black wrote,

The "establishment of religion" clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion to another ... in the words of Jefferson, the [First Amendment] clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect 'a wall of separation between church and State' ... That wall must be kept high and impregnable. We could not approve the slightest breach."

From an atheist-
1. This shouldn't be an atheist country. It should be a secular one. Why? See #2
2. The pilgrims came here because they were religiously repressed in their own country. (disregard the fact that they began repressing others when they got established here)
3. No other reason needed!

Personally, I don't want this to be an atheist country. I want it to be a religion neutral government that allows for religious freedom for all, just as the founders intended.

This should not be a strictly Christian country because there are many wonderful faiths out there that should have equal rights to practice.

The USA should be neither an Atheist or a Christian nation. The country was founded on religious freedom. Why does anyone want to force people into any belief? Let people choose for themselves. It's called freedom and it's what we are supposed to stand for, remember?

This is a nation of the people by the people. Let the voices be heard and let that be the guiding Law. Put school prayer to a vote and see what happens. Put abortion to vote and see what happens. Separation of Church and State is that you should not be persecuted for your religious beliefs not that the country should not have any.
Yours in Christ,

I do not presume to tell others what to believe or not believe, only that religious doctrine needs to be kept out of laws and policies that affect everyone.

This is because not everyone is Christian, nor should be. Christianity has some morals and views that not everyone agrees with, and therefore not everyone should be required to follow.

Hey! I got a compromise! How about you write a bunch of laws that only Christians have to follow, and the rest of us can ignore?

I'm a Christian and I don't think it needs to be a "Christian" nation per se.

This nation was founded by Christian individuals who established laws based on Christian scripture, yet they were seeking religious freedom. Thus, to define the US as Christian would be breaking what those who founded this country came here to do.

I'm all for separation of church and state.

Well the United States is neither. It is a secular nation. And most of the founding fathers were not christians they were Deist. And what denomination of chrisitanity do you think the USA would be? But really I would not want any of them myself or anyone telling me what to believe in.
