Between $6 and $10 an hour, depending on the age of the kids, and how much you expect them to do (i.e., feed dinner, give baths, clean up, etc.). The age isn't really an issue -- either they are responsible enough to babysit, or they aren't. However, around here, 16 year olds command top dollar, because they can drive themselves to and from jobs. :-)

For a baby: $7 an hour because babies are a lot of work for the kid, they poop, sleep, need to be played with, etc. For a toddler/preschooler: $5 an hour because the preschooler or toddler is going to wear the babysitter out with their constant wanting to play and then the terrible two's or three's, plus the struggle of nap time For a school age kid: $3 an hour because they are less to handle and the babysitter is just there to watch them and make sure that they are supervised while the parents are gone. For additional kids, I'd say pay $2 more each.

Base pay is around $5 an hour, plus extras - Two factors go into the extras:
1. How old are your kids? If they're infants that just need a bottle and a diaper change or six/seven years old that just need someone around to make sure they don't burn down the house, that would warrant a dollar or two less than two active toddlers that are into everything and need someone right on them every second.
2. How much do you expect the sitter to do? Baths, dinner, and cleanup warrant at least 3-4 dollars an hour more than just hanging out after the kids go to sleep. (Tack on an extra $2-$3 if you expect the sitter to tidy up - vaccuum, etc.)

I say about 7 to 10 depending on how long you will be gone and what you expect them to do and the ages the younger the more it should be. .
My 11 year watches my three year old sometimes and no not alone I am in the house but sometimes I need him out of my hair to get things done and she helps out and I pay her because she saves her money to get things she wants and I usually give her 25 dollars a week if she stays with him two hours a day so I can cook and get some chores done.
And all they do really is watch cartoons or color or play with his trains. And some times she will just do it and tell me she enjoys being the big sister. but I am always in the house because she is only 11 going on 12

It all depends on the circumstances. like if it's a family friend you may want to pay a little more since you know them, like maybe 11 or 12 dollars.but, if you are having like a random person come to babysit i would say maybe about 9 to 10 dollars. it may sound like a lot but if there's two kids. it's definately muchh harder.

I don't know how far south you live, I live in Manasquan. I know of a few baby sisters and I think they get about $10 an hour.
