I am about to get offline to read a book called "The Purpose Drived Life" By Rick Warren. What on earth am I here for?

Why do you believe you are here on earth? What is your purpose?

I believe that God has a plan for each of our lives. But, He cannot fulfill the plans that He has for our lives if we do not get on board with Him. That means believing in Jesus Christ and modeling our lives after His. Denying ourselves and picking up the cross. Leaving our old lives behind and living the new ones, through our new birth in Jesus Christ. Also actively worshiping Him, praising Him and studying His Word. Only then can He start to fulfill the plans that He has for us. God says He knew us even before we were conceived. Isn't that amazing! We may have been a surprise to our parents but not to Him.

Forget it, I read it. go get a classic or a comic book instead.

I am here because I am to lazy to actually do any thinking today.

But honestly, go play pinball or something. That book sucks.

Ok, next answer, I am here because I am not somewhere else.
This whole thing about life needing a meaning only really came into being with the Calvinists. Until then life was just life. Yes I know that the Catholics told everybody that our purpose was to praise God but they never made a real effort at explaning that. It took the peculiar obsessiveness of the Scottish to turn it into a big issue.

Here. From now on your purpose in life is to "Soak up the sun. Go out and have fun."
Because!

You've got to find your own purpose. I doesn't matter what you've beliefs are on this one.

My self appointed purposes are.

1. Take care of my family
2. Help my community through volunteer work
3. Distribute my knowledge and experiences through forums like this one. (Not saying I'm any wiser than anyone else)

Also, there is nothing wrong with a little hedonism. Set time aside for just you and do the things that make you smile.

When I was a non-believer I asked those questions, but now, as a christian having accepting Jesus into my heart I know why I'm here. My purpose here on earth is to love, serve and obey God, to witness and share the love of God to countless men, women, boy and girl who doesn't have a relationship with Jesus Christ. That is to believe in the God who sent Jesus Christ on earth, to repent of ones sins and to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord of their life.

In my religion we beieve that this life is a test. You can either make the decision to to the right things and pass the test with God, or you can choose to do the wrong things and pass the test with the devil. Either way you are being tested and your actions will have a big impact on what happens when you die.

To pass the test with God you are here only to worship Him and do what would make him happy.

I believe I'm here because of karma I've accrued in past lives. I've made my "purpose" to study the Dharma to try to help people and other sentient beings.
