The best/closet beach to Manhattan would have to be Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn or Breezy Point in Queens.

You could take the D train to Brighton Beach/Coney Island. Or you could take the Long Island Railroad to Jones Beach. For that get off in Wantagh. Then walk to the Brand Bicycle shop and wait for the bus to Jones Beach.

There are a few beaches in NYC run by the Parks Department that are free. Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, and Orchard Beach are probably the most popular.

Water Taxi Beach is a private artificial beach built on a pier in Long Island City, Queens. No swimming though.

Jones Beach? Fire Island? When I was little we would go to Jones beach or Fire island from Connecticut once in awhile.

coopers beach in southampton is one of the top ten in the world. take the train and then a cab. jones beach is your nearest option though
