My Vet recommends Glucosamine with Chondrytin for arthritis in dogs. You can purchase this on line under the name of "Flexi Paws" from Goldshield.

I give it to my older dogs, two capsules per day.

Cod Liver Oil is also good for the joints. You can add 1 tsp. every day in the dog's food.

The typical OTC ear mite treatment is pyrethrin based - and in most cases can be used on either dogs or cats. It's not as effective as the prescription products, but a lot better than nothing. That said, the label usually says it can be used in dogs and cats; I'm not aware of any which are labeled for cats only.

Get him a nice orthopedic dog bed, you'd be amazed at the difference a good rest will do.
Over the counter stuff for humans doesn't really do much for dogs and could make him sick or worse.
Go to the vet and get some good vitamins and a pain relieving prescription that will really make your companion feel better and improve the quality of his life.

Hi there!
Like you, I like dogs, I think you must seek an advise to a specialists but based on my opinion and experience my dog also in that situation, he got that on his training. I am very sad on that day because I thought my dog never get well, so I go to a doctor and he advised me to use Canine Super Potency Megavites & Colostrum Chewables because this product is designed to bolster the immune systems of geriatric dogs, or dogs that have gone through a recent surgery/ trauma, or are used for field trials or hunting. It contains unique ingredients and is loaded with the powerful immune booster - colostrum. Just think what it can do for the normal immune system.

Asprin can be given for pain. Here's a site with the dosage by weight
http://animalsunlimited.net/meds.htm
You can also get Glucosamine at the pet store, but it's really the same as the kind you get for humans..
Another thing that I've been researching is Boswellia. This is an herbal anti inflamatory. It also is good for dogs or humans. The net says that it is very good for pain.

CONSULT WITH YOUR DOGS VET!!!!!!!
They are the best and safest source of info in regards to pain/medical issues of your pet NOT people on the internet!!!

It is unfortunate that so many people decide to consult the internet instead of their dogs own vet and that so many decide to self medicate..we see the consequences of these actions almost daily at the vet hospital...far too many times it ends in tragedy for the dog.

glucosamine 500 mig 2 capsules daily and see if there is help.. it depends on his weight.
if he is 100 lb you can give him 4 caps daily 2 in the am and 2 in the pm.
aspirin might cause him to have trouble with his stomach and cause rectal bleeding......

Ascriptin, or ecotrin, enteric coated asprin. Give with food or yogurt. Asprin is a good over the counter anti inflamatory, if he has arthritis, but you should have the vet check him out and first.

You can buy otc pet drugs at 1800petmeds.com but I'd still suggest seeing a vet when you can, since it can be more serious than simple arthritis.
