Some will depend on what he likes, what he does, how old he is and of course what your budget is.

Regardless it is suppose to be something timeless and cherish forever...... not necessarilly something he uses everyday. There will be lots of time for gifts like that. Stay away from bracelets, necklaces and that sort of thing. Fashions come and go and remember..... this is a personal memento for life.

Traditionaly it is a watch. But it can't be a trendy, bulky thing and overpriced for what it is like a Tag Heuer or whatnot. Best something smaller and classy that will still look good with a tux on your 50th anniversary. I think an awesome thing would be an old fashioned type pocket watch. It is a thing that most guys would not think to buy for themselves. Put in your picture and have it engraved. Of course he won't carry it all of the time but it evokes so much "old timey and class". It also evokes the whole idea of family and passing it down to a son.
Of course you can spend a bundle but you can find really cool ones that don't cost that much.

A good place to look if you are thinking other things is Tiffany and Co. on the web under men's gifts. Now you can find the same sort of thing elsewhere but Tiffany is cool because things are classy. The money clip is neat as is the the swiss army knife. If he has a job (or is going to) that requires business cards the silver business card holder (engraved w. a picture inserted) would be awesome.

My wife wandered by as I was typing this (we are around 40) and asked me what I was putzing with. She said the pocket watch thing is awesome and combined with a letter would be great. Think old time letter with ribbon, parchment and sealed w. wax. Think Bonaparte writing to Josephine. Combined with the watch (wherever you are, no matter the day, year or time, I will love you) ...... my wife is good at that sort of thing. Or "this day I tell you how I feel". You get the idea.

I have been a soldier all of my life and participated in most every war and action for the past 20 years. But I am actually a big softie. My wife has written cool letters like that and you could not pry these out of my cold, dead hands. No matter what happens in life...... I get stressed dealing with world issues...... I can always pull out one of her letters and realize what is most important.... That I am a very fortunate man to have someone who loves me.

Your virginity.

No, seriously. You already gave him the best gift by saying the vows. If you want to wow him with something, fill out a funny yet romantic card and have a bridesmaid or family member deliver it to him while he's getting dressed for the ceremony. It will mean so much to him that you were thinking of him while you were getting dressed.

Sentimental Gift:
A men's jewelry box -- they have handcarved ones that don't look like a ladies version. Guys like to keep little trinkets, watches, money clips and miscellaneous stuff in them. On the bottom you could have his last name embossed on it, making it a treasured family heirloom someday.

Joke Gift:
A pair of handcuffs engraved "Now You're Stuck With Me"

write a letter to him telling him why you love him and all the special things you two shared that brought you to that day - your wedding day. It's something he will always cherish. You can always give him a new letter each year on your anniversary.
