Its perfectly legal.
Its a pistol that also shoots shotshells.
Its NOT a "short barreled shotgun".

Yes they are legal, and it has nothing to do with a "loophole" in the gun laws. ANY firearm with a barrel of less than 18 inches is either considered a pistol, or if certain conditions apply, it's considered an SBR ( Short barreled rifle) Or it falls under the AOW category( Any other weapon) You can legally "saw off" a shotgun barrel to well under 18 inches, have it registered as an AOW for a $200 fee, and it's perfectly legal.Transfer of AOW's and SBR's costs 5 bucks. Meaning if someone has already made and registered an AOW and sells it to you legally, you pay an extra 5 dollar AOW transfer fee, and the AOW is yours legally. Certain left wing states prohibit SBR and AOW ownership by private citizens. The pistol you're asking about, if legal to own in your state, is legal to fire 410 shotgun shells in it. This does not mean that any 45 long colt pistol will safely chamber and fire 410 shotgun shells. If the manufacturer has clearly stated that you can chamber and fire 410 in the pistol then you have no worrys.

Yes.... the loophole is that the pistol must have rifling.
"The Judge" can shoot 2.5 inch 410 shells and 45 Colts. It has a very flat, mild rifling so compromises between the two. You lose range with the 410 and accuracy with the 45 Colts. But it is great for shot range threats such as snakes or small bears. Good trail gun.
They are talking about coming up with a different version that can shoot 3 inch 410 shells and it may also be able to handle the 454 Casull. Great trail gun.

Yes, They are legal because of one reason..They were originlly designed to shoot shotgun shells. On the BATF angle there are no restrictions per sea on Shotgun Pistols, but individual state lasws are another thing altogether. Under several State laws possession of a "Shotgun Pistol" is not legal under any circumstances. Years ago Ithica Shotguns marketed an "Auto-Burgler" Dbl Barrel 12 gauge shotgun with very short barrels and a "Pistol" style grip.. Within a few months of production BATF ruled this a Class III weapon with the same restrictions as a machine-gun. Since then there has been a 6 shot 410 gauge short barreled revolver produced, Thompson Center Arms makes a 410 gauge Shotgun barrel that fits a Contender Model Pistol. Again the difference of legality depends on individual state laws and restrictions placed on sales and restricting actual ownership. These laws also cover importing such weapons from other countries.

I believe a short barreled rifle needs to have a stock to be restricted as a Class III SBR. I'm not sure about shotguns, but on rifles I know you can have a barrel as short as you want, without getting a class III, as long as there is no stock.

Yes, it's legal. The gun makers found a loop hole in the law banning sawed off shotguns, and I love it! Freedom will prevail no matter what the gun banners do !
There are also shot shells available for .22 long rifles, 9mm, .40 s&w, and .45 acp. I'd love to have them for my 10mm Glocks. The .45 Glock does great with shot shells, and the power amazed me when shoting plywood. Great rat killer!

If the barrel's rifled, it's legal, at least in theory. I suppose some hardhead is going to saw off a rifled slug barrel to push the point, and it's anybody's guess how the courts will rule on that sort of thing, but as of now, it's not specifically prohibited.

Taurus makes one called "The Judge", it's advetised with a video on their website.
It's designed apparantly for protection while in the vehicle. Carjackings are big in Brazil I guess, so the guy comes up along side and you blast him.
