For the Forbidden City (the Forbidden City is the most northerly part of the Palace where the Emperor actually lived), all inclusive, a 1/2 day should be plenty.

The first Kentucky Fried Chicken ever built in China is at the South corner of the plaza, if it's still there you could go there for lunch.

When you get to the ticket booth rent a recorded Palace tour and just follow along with that. You will find just looking around will become a bit monotonous.

The other half of the day you can do Tiananmen, Jianmen (the gate at the other side of the square and Tiantan (Temple of Heaven).

In fact I would start at Temple of Heaven and work your way, South to North, all the way to the Exit of the Forbidden City. By now you will have walked A LOT. Catch a cab.

If you have a chance to go to the Palace Museum in Taipei it will complete the tour.

I just recently joined a Beijing tour last May, we stayed at that forbidden palace for about 3 hours. If you're planning to go there anytime this year, the place is under construction for the Olympics next year, you won't see the main palace.

A day is too short. The Forbidden City complex consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 square meters. You may need to spend at least a day time to vist Palace Museum alone.

1/2 day is all you will want to stay. See The Great Wall first, the silk factory for presents and the hutongs. I just got back and want to see the Great Wall again.
