They have an expiration date but usually this is purely for the supply company to cover themselves. Do the vitamins genuinely lose total efficacy or should they still have beneficial results past this date? If the container was air-sealed would the expiration date still apply?

Would there be any deleterious effects due to the breakdown of any of the vitamins? Or would they just not do anything?

If the vitamin bottle is unopened, the vitamins should be more stable, so that they'll still be good for some time (months or years) after the expiration. They will gradually lose their potency. The speed that this happens is different for each of the vitamins. Some are much more stable than others, but all of them are fairly stable. Oxygen will speed their decomposition, more for some vitamins than for others.

Some do and some don't.

It is generally a good policy not to consume expired items to save a buck or two !

When they reach their date they should be about half potency.
