I said that Christians were responsible for the Inquisitions and the Crusades...I wrote this about a week and a half ago and still get about a letter a day, usually with the subject "Hey, Retard!" or something similar...
Did I miss something in my history classes? Are Catholics no longer considered Christians?

Einstein: You can check out the question. The Asker listed atheist leaders and the number of deaths the were responsible for, then listed a number of peaceful Christians to compare the two...I reminded him of the flaw in his argument...

There are good and bad people who subscribe to EVERY religion and have done bad things. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone!" The idea of pointing out historical misdeeds to cast dispurgence on a particular religion is sad and wrong. In addition, sending "hate mail" of any kind is wrong. Personally, I try to respect each person's right to their own beliefs and not stand in judgment of anyone. I'm not perfect, but that's what I try to do.

Do not fear. You have not only not missed anything in the history classes . In fact, you have studies history in the correct perspective.Even Catholics cannot challange that they were responsible for the Inquisitions The Cat.holics who inadulged into it were victims of the waves of reformations which had loosed the fast anchors of faith and threatened to carry the safe and secure world of the Middle Ages in its sweep. The Inquisitions were a last ditch attempt to hold fast to the anchor of 'Faith'. The burning down of Bruno and the terrorisation of Galileo are instances in point. The poor souls who are harassing you are the remants of these Inquisitors. To be pities rather than to be hated. The Crusades were also an attempt to put Catholicism to a seculare use. Even if overtly these were attempts to obtain access to the birthplace of Jesus they were in fact attempts to open up the trade land route to the East through the Middle East which had then fallen to the Muslims. There was nothing essentially anti-Islam in them like the present attack on Iraq and Afghanistan by the West and theduststorm of Terrorism raised by it with an anti-Islamic face. There is no doubt about the faith of theCatholics in Christianity. They have unfortunately forgotten the dictum that essentially that alone is religion as sustains life.Like the orfthodox Hindus and Muslims they are pitifully trying to adhere to the literal meaning of the scriptures.

I think maybe people feel you are tying the happenings of yesterday with the Christians of today. The Inquisition and the Crusades were performed by people who had perverted the Christian faith, just like the suicide bombings, etc. of today are caused by people who are perverting the Muslim faith. What you said is correct in a sense and wrong in other senses. Christians as a whole did not cause those incidents, some Christians did. Besides, the Crusades and the Inquisition had to do with power and control, not faith.
People don't like to be categorized with psychos who are long gone just because they carry the same title. This might be where all the animosity is coming from.

You are quite funny. And just who do you think it was that rose up and defeated Hitler and Japan in WW II ? A nation of mostly Christians. And it was Christianity that caused the Barbarians to finally give up their long warlike ways. And the Roman Empire was forever changed by Christianity.
Did Christians do some bad things? Of course. But you fail to note that every time it was other Christians that put a stop to those bad things. Who stopped the Salem Witch Trials? Christians. Who put a stop to the Inquisitions? Other Christians. The Crusades? Other Christians. And you fail to to show any knowledge of history if you do not mention the Muslims and the things they did in Spain and other parts of Europe.
Of course, Catholics are Christians so I guess you do know a little about what you are talking about.

According to a decree the Pope just made , the Roman Catholic is now the ONLY TRUE Christian Church, and that ALL other Christian Churches are pale imitations of the Catholic Christian Church. The Spanish Inquisition was conducted by the Catholic Church in Spain.
The Crusades were led by the Church of England + other Christian groups. Why should someone hate you for stating historical fact?

I don't know why people send hate mail at all. I accept that the Crusades happened by The Church which was also a governing body at the time. It had to fight in response to centuries of Muslim wars and takeovers of countries. The Church actually helped save Europe from being turned into an islamic continent, so I am thankful for that. Although now it seems it was a waste of time and people are just turning over Europe to islam.
God Bless.

Eleventy, it was NOT just the Catholics who were involved in the "Burning Times". In fact, in Germany, which had the largest numbers of "Witch Burnings" the overwhelmoing number of executions were conducted by the followers of Martin Luther. The Salem Witch executions were conducted SOLEY by "protestants" as well.
Christianity as a whole, bears responsibility for the massive loss of life in BOTH the Crusades AND in the Inquisition/Burning Times. The sooner that ALL Christians stand up and accept the ROLE of their Religions in these and other acts of Genocide, the soner they can work on ways to END all forms of destructive persecution which continues even to this very day. Even NOW Witches and heretics are being killed in the name of the God of Abraham. There have been "Witch" killings in Africa even this very year. The "Crusades" continue even at this very time in Iraq and other areas of the Middle East. The Folowers of the God of Abraham have been responsible for far too much massive killing and it's about time for it all to stop. How can you actually believe that God wants you to just go out and kill people, GOD's people, using your Religion to justify this massive war on humanity? Get your noses OUT of your Biobles, Trahs, and Korans and start living your lives in the SPIRITS of those Holy works.

No, but the teacher missed to tell you that state has seen in Christianity a way to control masses.
But in order to do that the state figured out that people must know only half of the true, just enough to provoke panic in they're soul. That's why "average Joe" had been told that it is best for him not to read scripture so they may not misunderstand it and go to hell. This teaching can be found even nowadays. People prefer to ignore scripture now, but not necessarily for the same reason but for being afraid not to become fanatic like the ones you talk about. So the state started to use religion as a way to convince it's citizens to obey some guy decisions without questioning pretending that doing other way they will surely go to hell for they had to believe without questioning but even that is nowhere in the Bible (yet even now some people believe that this is a Biblical teach) and one reading it would easily figure out that something is very fishy about they're leaders.
I said enough now but there is more.

Surprise, surprise. 11 answers in 4 minutes. I've only been on this site about 1 week but I realised within the first 20 minutes that hammering Christians or for that matter any religion guaranteed you at least 20 answers. First from the outraged religious groups, then the gleeful atheists and finally the bigots. It's all so old. How can you not be bored with it when you've been doing it for so long?

I feel for you getting all the hate mail. If something is said or done that I don't like, I just ignore it. I don't know why some have to retaliate. Catholics are still considered Christians as far as I know.
