I am getting married in the States and then flying back to Mexico with American Airlines. We will be receiving wedding gifts, of course, and I was thinking of packing some of them in a box instead of a suitcase. Can I substitute a box for one of the 2 pieces of checked luggage?

yes you can but you cant just use any box. the dimension has to be reasonable and is more or less equal to a suitcase ...

it might be easier to fit everything inside a box because of its size.. but i will not recommend it .. it's hard to repack if they question an item in it .. and I had an experience with southwest when they almost misplaced my box because they considered it as an off-size (?) baggage ..

I have seen people check in boxes, I have also seen people being send away to repack.
Partly it depends on the airline and their rules, partly it depends on the box itself. Better check with the airline.
If you may use a box, make sure it is a strong one, and stays within the limits for luggage size the company has.
But why not bring a suitcase that if as big as still fits those limits and use that. (Check for weight too.)
