Because that's how buildings get their heat and/or air conditioning - otherwise, they'd have to change to hot water boilers, and with the price of NYC real estate being what it is, that's not feasible because those things take up a LOT of space.

back in the early 20th century that is how ppl got heat throughout new york,
the steam rises into apartment buildings and the radiator becomes hot
