I recommend you see a chiropractor for this problem. I think you will get better results Then physical therapy. regular treatment will get you out of the severe pain.

in the meantime Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts. Soak for 30 minutes. The Epsom salts will help eliminate the lactic acid that forms on the muscles from over exertion.

Massage an analgesic cream into the sore muscles.

Dehydration can cause severe pain . I recommend you drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day.

500mg of calcium and magnesium, taken twice daily, can help with diminishing the pain.

Have you had a MRI? This would show exactly where the disc is putting pressure. If the disc is putting pressure on the nerve....then that is the problem and what is causing your pain.

A discectomy or laminectomy is a surgical procedure that MAY help....and please note that I stress MAY. Bedrest, physical therapy, and other things are always used before resorting to surgery and very smartly too! While many people have had excellent results with these surgeries, many others have not. (myself included)

Find a very good doctor, check them out up one side and down the other, and make sure you understand all the risk. Get at least 2 opinions as to if the surgery will help in your particular case before you decide.

I go through this every now and again. Motrin 1200 mg every four hours (Acts as a anti-inflammatory) and lay on the floor with your legs bent onto a coffee table (Your knees bend where the table begins). This reduces the inflammation and takes pressure off your spine. After that, you can only wait.
