Most grocery stores here don't care about a couple extra items. Besides, you can always say you mis-counted. I have never seen anyone refused at a check-out counter.

If there are long lines and you have more that a couple of items over the limit, have consideration for your fellow shoppers and use the regular line.

If the express lane is the only one open, most cashiers won't make a big deal of it. I've been out shopping sometimes and been just over the limit. Being the straight arrow I am, I'll go to the normal checkout. They're usually faster anyway. But one time, the cashier in the express lane said, "Come check out over here!" And when I explained to her that I was a few items over the limit, she said it didn't matter--the store was nearly empty and there was no use wasting time by waiting about.

If you're in that situation and the cashier doesn't call you over, it never hurts to ask if it would be okay.

I see this all the time with large families. Grandma stands there with her coin purse and then every one of the 11 or more kids, that appear to be siblings, places a random 5 or so items from the shopping cart onto the conveyor belt. The momma usually keeps the kids in order.

So, try that. Ask the cashier to ring these items up separate. Pay. Run the rest through.

Depends

1. If there is something in the cart that I don't need I just put that one away

2. If I need everything in the cart I simple go into the self service line or the other lanes. I'm not going to talk about anyone else (ie the people that can't count) then turnaround and do the same thing. That would be hypocritical.

I stay in that line and give one item to the cashier to return stating that I had one extra item. Or if I couldn't live without one item, I'd just go to another line.

if i can get rid of an item, i will do that. if not i see if there is a line, if there is not a line, i use that checkout. if there is a line, i stand at the back and if people line up behind me i would go to the regular checkout.

Hide the smallest item and play it off. Now...if it's a 10 item lane and you got 20...better hope I'm not behind you!

if it's really busy in the regular lanes, and i don't feel like i'll be inconveniencing anyone by doing so, i'll go to the express lane -- the cashier never says anything to someone with obviously many more items, why should i be so concerned with only one over?

I go in another lane. I only use Express if I have the number of items or less and I'm paying cash.

Regular line. They always put the trainee/slowest person on the express line; I get through faster in the regular line every time.
