I don't remember them warring before we invaded Iraq. In fact, Sunni and Shite lived next door and intermarried.

Brits stayed in Northern Ireland for over a generation.
Just when things start moving in the direction of progress [Iraqi Parliment operating again with all major players present, Al-Qeida losing ground and safe areas, etc.], why do you want to quit?
Do you maybe have some secret desire that Sunnis and Shi'ites should fight forever and thus keep Iraq poor forever?
Or would you prefer to simply throw open the Iraq borders and say to all who might care -- come in and take over this mess?
If Shi'ite Iran acted on such an invitation and slaughtered 250,000 Sunnis in order to establish 'order' -- would you care?
If they then doubled the price of oil and output of terrorists, would you care?
GL -- reality isn't so simple.

The grand plan is ot get them talking and respecting each other again...they did it early on in thier history but since then it has degraded into the constant warring that they know today. Times can and must change, they need to learn how to talk and compromise with each other. If it wasn't for the oil in the region we could just let them continue to blow themselves and their country up and give it as much thought as we do to Dafur or Ethiopia, but they do have a commodity that we need so in our own interests we cannot allow it to continue.

Actually, the've only been at war for about 1100 years. The first couple hundred were just philosophical debate.
And apparently, the current plan is to stay in Iraq forever -- since those supporting the war have defined "winning" as an end to all violence in the region.

Where do people get the lame idea that Shia and Sunni have been at war for centuries?
You people need to do a little more research than mindlessly listening to the TV news that is aimed at room-temperature IQs.

We have both Sunnis and Shiites in the USA, they are not killing each other here. Democracy, peace, and prosperity.
To imply that they can never be at peace is ignorant and racist.

Bush has no plan. One 'Grand Plan' would be to exterminate all of them but I doubt we will stomach that on moral grounds. If we are lucky they will kill off a few millions of one another in the next decade.
