There are a number of reasons. They left Ireland because the island could not support its population. More specifically, the Great Famine in the 1840s caused a massive exodus from Ireland. Why specifically New York? NYC was the biggest port in the US, so while the Irish also went to Boston, Philadelphia, Canada, Britian, and many other places, New York just the biggest entry point. Also, more than Boston and Philadelphia, New York always was a city based on money more than class. One more thing, New York was more of a melting pot with people from all over coming there. This combination made it an obvious choice.

Oh, here we go - because the nasty British protestants stole all the poor Irish Catholic peoples spuds and caused famine and pain. Before anyone goes down that route, I'm English C of E and my husband is Irish Catholic and we couldn't care less so I'm not sure why people that aren't even that nationality or religion should make such a fuss. Beside the point that New York had a lot more to offer them than rural Ireland,

It was the end of the little Ice Age, which lasted almost 100yrs. This is when the Irish potato went real mushy!! & This is when the Irish went to Canada & the US. The same amount if not more of them went to Canada. They were a whole lot nicer to them in Canada!!!! I am Irish, & had family go to Canada because it was better. & Then Chinese ( how ever you spell it) came in at a faster rate.

Because they find New York as a get away to a more fun place, new life and stuff.

But I've been living in Dublin, Ireland for almost 2 years. The only thing that I can say is, it is a good place to make money compare to my home country. Mainly because of the currency exchange. Euros have bigger value than my country. That's all.

Well, first there was the Irish potato famine and they were all starving...and America was opening the door to immigrants at Ellis Island in N.Y. Almost all immigrants during that time came into N.Y. harbour.

At the time there was a huge famine going on in Ireland, and the British had control of Ireland at the time, and they were taking homes from the people and burning property...a good movie to watch is "Far and Away" with Tom Cruise and Nichole Kidman...it will show the Irish struggle against their British masters, and how some flee to America for freedom and land opportunities.
