If that candidate is the best person for the job, then so be it. In the history of our country, has there been an atheist President? If not, we have to ask why. It may be that the majority of Americans won't vote an atheist into office.

He would never be elected. People like to claim there isn't, but there is such a high connection btwn politicans slipping in their religious beliefs, and then getting votes and supporters from people who share those same beliefs.
Also, for whatever reason, people always think Atheist worship the devil (which is crazy b/c if they don't believe in god they obviously also don't believe in the Devil!) or that they are just empty non-caring people. And people are stubborn and don't want to hear otherwise or welcome change. So the second best guy (or gal!) would probably get elected that year!

Yes I would. Religion has no place in politics, it should not be a deciding factor of the qualifications of a candidate. I believe that an Atheist would probably do a much better job at separating church and state and ensure religious freedom for all.

He couldn't be "clearly the best candidate" if he was an Atheist.
Just kidding.
The first President of the USA who doesn't associate himself with any specific religious affiliation doesn't happen for nearly three decades, but it does happen. So yes, I would because doing the best job possible has everything to do with the total person and not with any one specific aspect of them.

Clearly vote for him.
Somehow if we had another candidate like Bush, people will vote for him solely for being religious and not because of being the best candidate

He couldn't NOT be the best candidate. How can anyone take seriously a man who believes in invisible friends? I mean really!

I personally don't give a damn what your religious beliefs are as long as they don't interfere with his job as the President. Since religion has NO place in government, I don't see why it matters what a person believes on that front.

If he was "clearly" the best and I agreed with his stance on the issues that I find important, then of course I would vote for him.

Even if a atheist ran for office and made it, he would have to respect others in their religious beliefs, because that's their right to religion.
