The Dead Sea has the distinctions of being the lowest spot on earth (1,378 feet beflow sea level), the deepest hypersaline sea on earth (1,083 feet) and the second saltest boyd of water on earth (8.3 times as salty as the oceans, or 35% saline). This prevents any visible life from being able to survive within the lake, no fish. There are some microboes and algae able to live there. It is so salty that a person laying on the water is unable to sink.

Its water is able to support at lot of vegetation and animal life around the sea. It is considered one of the most fertile areas of Israel.

The Dead Sea also has no outlet, so anything that flows into the Dead Sea from the Jordan River remains there to decay.

It is from those conditions that it gets it name the "Dead" sea.

Pretty dead. The salt content is so high that barely anything can live in it - and nothing larger than a brine shrimp. For example, there is a famous painting of a lamb standing in the sea, and the story goes that the artist had to use multiple lambs because after standing for a while the lambs would inevitably drink from the salty water and eventually die of dehydration. Salt is essentially a preservative, and has also been used to destroy soil fertility during warfare. Another reason for the name is that all people float in the dead sea because salty water is more dense than fresh water, which is similar to how corpses float.
In Hebrew the Dead Sea is called the "Salty Sea", which I suppose is a more accurate name.

If I remember correctly, it's the 'dead' sea because the salt content is so high, the average human is fully buoyant in it.

At that concentration of salt, the only things likely to live inside are some halophilic bacteria -- it's at least 5x the salinity of the ocean.

So dead that nothing but a few bacteria can survive in it. It's not that it's dead, but that it's rather salty. It's the saltiest body of water on Earth.

It's dead it that it has no fish or other multi-cellular creature that lives in it.

It's good for the skin - my eczema totally cleared up after bathing in it.

However, it has been discovered that there are microbes that live in it, these microbes can tolerate the high salt content and there is no natural predator.

Very dead because it has so much salt that nothing can live in it. So that is a good example of what having too much salt does for you.
