The bible proves that occasionaly dead people will crawl out of their graves and walk around. Today we nail the coffins shut to prevent that from happening.

Many reasons. If they are transporting the coffin and it tips over, it would be quite awkward to get a shovel and scoop the body remnants back into the coffin... To name one of them.

I'm sure it goes back to early times. Maybe so if there was a flood, the body stayed in the coffin. I don't really know.

Probably to prevent grave robbing. Many grave robbers would open the coffin and steal any jewelry or anything worth anything.

1- so it doesn't open. with modern caskets they are sealed (don't know how, but its not nails)
2- superstision- vampires. I read a nice book about the studies of vampires and how priests nailed the coffins and if they weren't nailed and a vampire arose the priest would kill it.
very interesting and weird.

In case one of the drunken pallbearers drop the casket and the lid falls off, allowing the zombie contained therein to escape.

They really aren't nailed anymore, but they are secured so that shifts in the ground don't expose the corpse... flooding, earthquakes and other natural occurences can cause some problems...

Probably to deter grave robbers. It used to be a pretty lucrative business, from what I understand.
