I'm looking to get a car, either a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, for their reliability and resale value. I'm not sure if it is better to buy brand new or to get a 2004 or 2005. Money is not really an optical as far as buying new or used but I don't want to throw my money away. I'd like to get the best value that I could but still have a fairly new and reliable car.

2006 its 2yrs old now, you can probably get one with low miles, 10,000-12,000 for $6000 less than a new one

This one's right up my alley since I've recently owned a Subaru Forester, two Honda Accords, a Toyota Corolla and various European makes (not asked in the question). With 135K on the clock, I can say the Forester is the most reliable of my cars, even more trouble-free than the Hondas and the Corolla. However with that said, the Subaru has been more expensive and more of a hassle to fix than the other Japanese cars. The parts have been more expensive, and I have found less places that can work on them versus the other Japanese cars. In looking at my records, the dealer services have been about 1.5X as expensive as the Honda's and almost twice the Toyotas. This could be a function of the dealers, etc, but I have budgeted more to maintain the Subaru than the other cars. It's significantly cheaper to fix than the Audi I owned ... that car was a nightmare. I still like it the best of all my cars, and even though getting it fixed is a little more hassle, it has so few problems that I really don't care.

Under normal circumstances the clear answer would be that a 2-3 year old used car is the best value. However, we are talking about Toyota and Honda whoose cars don't lose much value. You probably won't save much by going the used route with these 2 brands and won't get the warranty either, so if these are your 2 options definitely go ahead and buy new. If you want to really save some money and get a quality used car, you can't go wrong with a Mazda 3 or Hyundai Elantra both of which have longer warranties then Honda/Toyota, but lose more alot more value those 1st couple years.

Buying a quality used car is always the best financial choice. You can get a certified used Honda or Toyota for much less money than a new one and get a warranty equal to the new car warranty. And the financing should be no different.

Cars loose most of their value in the first 2 years. So look for a car that is 2 years old, low miles and certified.

if you can afford it get it new. I owned a 05 civic that was nothing but problems so I sold it. I also own an 05 elantra and knock-on-wood has been excellant. It was great that the civic has a terrific resale value. i plan on keeping my elantra so I am not concerned about it's lousy resale but it also cost alot less than the civic and came with alot more things included in the price.
