I don't believe in tithing because everything already belongs to God. It seems to me that the function of giving something is a form of sacrifice.

As far as charity, is it the act of giving money or alleviating suffering. If a billionare gives $10,000 to a build an orphanage but a poor person can give only $50 to feed the orphans for a week, whose sacrifice is

Yes, it all belongs to God. If we tithe, we still keep 90% of our money - would you give away 90% of what was yours like God does?

As for charity, the Bible says it's better to give than to receive. When you give alms (money to the poor), it's a win/win situation. They're blessed by your giving, and you're blessed for helping them.

Lastly, the $50 donation is greater in God's eyes. There's a story in the Bible about a wealthy man who donated a lot of money, but to him it was just a drop in the bucket. A poor woman also donated, but she gave all she had: 2 coins. Jesus said her gift was worth more.

God doesn't need our money, He wants our hearts.

Hey, thanks - you just reminded me of a really good Keith Green song. Can't remember the title, but it began "To obey is better than sacrifice, I don't need your money, I want your life, and I hear you say that I'm coming back soon, but you act like I'll never return." Oh, yeah - the title was "To Obey is Better than Sacrifice". duh.

Do you not want to help anyone?

Tithing -- the church has to have money to heat and cool the building, pay for running water, etc.
Mow the lawns, keep the building clean, grounds kept, etc.

It doesn't matter HOW much you give to charity, but I do think you would give a little something.

The Lord will bless anything you do to help someone else.

I do NOT tithe 10% to the church. I spend way more than 10% of my salary on my students at school. That it my tithe and part of my charity.

God never asks for a sacrifice. We give to receive. Law of cause and effect. Even if you give all your money to the poor, you did it to receive something: approval, fame, more money, love. Tithing is so your greedy heart can open up to receive what God wants to give. You can't receive it until you are open to receive it, but most won't open until they give.

Well, if you're going to go by THAT logic, how great of a sacrifice did Jesus make?!?! He gives up what -- ten, maybe twenty years of life as a carpenter living in a Bronze Age backwater, in exchange for RULING, forEVER, in PARADISE?

Some noble gesture THAT was....

Just like you, I think there is a difference.

Tithing should pay the bills for the church you attend.

Charity is not for you or the place you worship, it is for those who are less fortunate and might need some help.

The pastor has to eat too, correct?

The money goes back into the house of God for ministry. And the Lord loves a cheerful giver (Greek "hillarious" giver)
