Mine gets that. The vet put him on Science Diet c/d prescription diet and the urine crystal problem cleared right up. The unfortunate side effect (for me) is that the other cat that is eating it is gaining weight so I have to monitor her food. The vet told me that this food would promote weight gain.

You need to switch to prescription food for a few months or less. The prescription food isn't good to feed long-term. Once it clears up feed a high quality canned diet like Merrick's, Wellness, Innova, Felidae, etc. It has lots of protein and water in it which will help prevent crystals in the future.

Make sure he eats c/d or Urinary formula, preferably canned food, with extra water in it. If he doesn't like the extra water in the food, give him some with a syringe every evening. The more dilute the urine, the less crystals it forms. also check for UTI, in case he needs antibiotics.
And check that he does uriate, because if he blocks he needs urgent trip to the vet.

This was a problem for me also, my vet knew that budget was an issue for me, she said I didn't need to buy an expensive food, but to find one that was low in magnesium. From what she told me, that is what caused the crystals. I always try to buy food that has less than .09 magnesium.
