Labs are generally quite moldable and adapt to most places and most people. He'll settle down with your friends just fine, and be happy there, - I'm sure they're good people, otherwise you wouldn't trust them, right?
I know he won't forget you, but after a week or so, I don't think he'll miss you much, either, quite frankly - dogs live in there here and now, and while they mope a bit initially, he'll be fine without you. Which is what you want (when you are not heartbroken and want him to miss you as much as you miss him).
HOWEVER:
The fact that he'll get along fine without you doesn't mean he doesn't love you and show you the happiest little puppy face ever when you come back!!
I go to school abroad and have been forced to leave my Chinese Crested for periods of four months, but also for as long as one year. I'm not going to lie to you - I miss my dog more than anyone else (although I do miss my friends and family, too).
When I'm away, I talk to my loved ones on Skype, and I think you should, too - my dog would always hang in the computer room when we visited, and sometimes he'd climb up and look for me behind the speakers (*tear*)
So that he wouldn't find it heartbreaking and weird, I'd usually address him directly at the end of our conversation and ask him if he'd been to the kitchen today for a treat - he really came to enjoy our visits, and it was awesome to see him on screen, too. (In all honesty, eventually he'd take advantage of the situation and cry loudly until I acknowledged his presence and told him to get a treat)
And when you meet him - from a distance, he'll first look at you, just like he would another stranger. Then you'll see him take a second look, kinda like - "Wait, that almost looked like...."
And then he'll come lunging toward you, with a smile (mine does, anyways) and I say duck and take cover, because you are about to receive the biggest, wettest puppy kisses you've ever gotten - whether you want all of them or not....
Seriously - no matter how lovely his temporary family is, YOU are his, and he won't forget that, no more than you will.
Leave, do what you need to do, and look forward to coming safely home to a big, hairy lump of love!
Best wishes from -c

I know he is a very important part of your family, I think he will miss you, especially at first, but he won't forget you, he will be so glad to see you when you get back, dogs have great memories, and he won't forget your love, kindness, or your scent. In the mean time as hard as it is you can be pleased with your self knowing that you are putting him with caring people, who will take very good care of him. He will have fun romping with the other dogs, and he will be well cared for,
I think we as humans feel guilty, when we should not, relax a little your big guy will be fine, and oh so glad to see you when you return home. God Bless you as you go overseas, come back safely.

I know how sad you feel. I had to find a good home for one of my big dogs once when I had to move. Unfortunately for me, I knew I was not getting my dog back. (Hardest thing I've ever had to do). He WILL remember you, and be SO excited to see you. I know the guilt you are feeling. A dog will adapt and be happy with the couple you are trusting to care for him, but just wait until he sees you when you get back! I am almost in tears here, just thinking about when the two of you re-unite....he will be fine, and you will be too. Bless you!!
You know you are doing the right thing.

Its very sad to have to go and leave lovedones behind, even your loving animals. I think your dog will be fine, the people you are leaving him with sound like great people that wont let anything happen to the dog. when you get back all the emotions your dog had before will be right there when you return. please be safe. You made the right decision. where over seas are you going? and just think about it 6 to 8 months really is not that long of a time to be away. just have a safe trip and a safe return.

I'm so sorry to hear that you will be separated from your baby. He will be ok...he will not forget you, you are in his heart...and of course he's gonna miss you! Good news is that dogs have no concept of time, so he won't notice how long you'll be away for, but you'll get the same greeting whether it's for a day or for a year! Best of luck to you!

I am sorry to hear that Storm. But why are you leaving? Anyways, I think your friends will do a great job raising him. But make sure you have a contract that states you WILL return for the dog.
I recently saw a case on tv where someone did the same thing and the "friends" grew so attached to the dog that they didn't want to return him to the owner who had to go away.
Good luck!

Your dog wont forget you and as long as he's being cared for he will be fine...bring pictures with you...and make sure you call on them and see how he's doing...it'll work out.! try to leave a baseball cap or tee shirt you've worn for him....so he can smell you even if you're not there!
..and how cool are they to take care of him for you...a lot of people end up having to turn in their pets to the humane society in cases like this.. Best of luck overseas...be safe!

i couldnt do that i have a lab pup and i can never leave him for long periods, he;s like my best friend. I would not be able to go, but if you have to he will be fine with others, labs are very friendly. I can see your point though, the dog wont forget you, if youre the one who has fed him and gave him attention, he will always remeber you..

Aww, well I think that if your dog is in good hands, you'll have nothing to worry about. I'm sure your dog will miss you as much as you miss him, but on the bright side, at least he'll make friends with the three other dogs.

I have been around dogs my whole life my mom is a pet groomer and she has been doing it for almost 30 years your dog will always have the memory of you in its mind and your smell too ... my brother was in a simalar situation too he gave us his lab mix and we kept him for 3 years while he went on duty and when my brother came back the dog went to him like he had never left...so he should be fine....dogs are really intelligent!
