Because they live pathetic little lives and talking about, and bad mouthing the people their jealous of is the way that makes them feel better about themselves. It sucks but theres really nothing you can do about it, Your better than them.

before i react i think of the person and what could possibly be the reason she is jealous of me. Then i consider the source who told me that she is gossiping behind my back : are they just trying to cause trouble or do i trust that person. next i confront the gossip girl and ask her what her problem is with me and i tell them if it continues to persist i will be back to deal with it again only next time not so nice.

I would totally ignore that person for I hate to waste good energy.
Unless this happens at my work place, with my friends or family and causes conflict.
I would meet that person, never alone, I would make sure others are around. Bring all the gossip out, then I would give them enough rope to hang with.
People will see through that person, they'll lose face and you come out the winner.
Good luck!

It does hurt my feelings. If someone asks me about it, I will tell them my side but as a rule, I keep quiet. Raising a fuss over it only gives the gossiper credibility.

Live your life, and make sure that you don't make the same mistake. Don't waste your energy worrying about it. In fact, you might want to feel sorry for the person who apparently feels insecure enough to want to cut you down for some reason.

Just continue to carry on with your business. By cutting in their pity talk you are just giving them more to gossip about.

don't react with horror and try to expose the lie, if someone mentions it to you quietly deny it once ! Sooner or later everyone will know the character of the malicious rumour monger and ignore their chatter about you

I would thank them in front of others for considering me important enough to talk about...with a big smile.
