I have been invited to stay with a French family in Brittany. They have done me a great favour, and I feel that after that, and after staying with them for a short while, I should at least offer them some sort of gift - maybe something to thier kids. What should I do / give that wouldn't embarrass them, but be suitable at the same time?

A traditional gift is always nicely accepted.
Examples would be: chocolates, a nice basket of cheese or meats, a bottle of wine, flowers for the mother, etc.
Good luck!

You should bring the gift with you as a thank you up front. Maybe something particularly special about where you are from would be nice. A french couple brought us a cocktail table book of their city, Lyon, and I loved that. The gift should be something generic and usually is focused on the woman...hostess towels and soaps, or for both a nice bottle of wine with an opener. Be creative. It's not usual to do something for the kids unless you are close to these people.

How wonderful to be going to Brittany!!!! A gift from your home state or country is always a nice idea, a photo of you in a frame or some sort of gift that gives them a token of your thanks and something that makes them think of you. A bunch of flowers with a note, would be as nice as anything, it really is the thought that counts. Have a great time!!!!!

Do you know what their kids like? I'm in highschool, writing to a French penpal, and she has the same interests I do. It has influences from other countries much like America, unless it's a very traditional family.
Maybe clothing or a giftbasket? I'm not creative, but I'm sure you won't offend them. If it strikes them odd, they would probably just laugh it off.

A big bunch of flowers for the Mum always works and a nice cake for everyone else. I know it sounds silly but believe me when shoved in front of them most people can't resist cake.

A nice bouquet of flowers for the lady of the house, and a box of quality chocolates (liqueur?), or a bottle of liqueur.
That would be my suggestion.
Enjoy your stay in Brittany--I'm sure it is warmer/drier than here!.

I would get them a bottle of wine or a gift card to their favorite shop. I would give it to them as you leave.
