If you are Australian, you may still need to apply for a visa to Vietnam. The procedure now is very fast and simple, and I recommend you apply for a visa on arrival via a travel agency in Vietnam, it is easy and inexpensive.

Please vote for my answer so I could do it better next time.

Have nice trip to Vietnam.!

Robert

get a visa before ,or better yet? check the embassy of Vietnam in China, to make sure about visa on arrival? or before depature :
Ambassador: Hu Qianwen

Address: 46 HOANG DIEU ROAD, HANOI, VIET NAM P.O.BOX 13
Tel: +844-8453736, 903441338
Fax: +844-8232826
E-mail: chinaemb_vn@mfa.gov.cn
Website: http://vn.china-embassy.org/chn/default.htm
i checked for you , and yes, you will need a visa before entering Vietnam
GENERAL INFORMATION
Only citizens of certain countries can visit Vietnam without an entry visa (valid for visit within 30 days). Those countries include: some Asean countries, Korea, Japan & Scandinavians (2005). All other citizens are required to get an entry visa before departure or a pre-approved entry visa (visa is issued on arrival at Vietnam’s International Airports) supplied before arrival in Vietnam
We recommend that you obtain your entry visa by having a valid passport stamped prior to your departure by applying to any one of the Vietnam Embassies and/or Consulates worldwide

Apply for a visa in the Vietnam Embassy in China before you take a flight to Vietnam.

Agreed with Robert, if you do not have much time, you may apply for a visa to Vietnam via a travel agent.
