DO NOT put them to sleep. I would come and pick them up and take good care of them before i would hear of someone doing that.
They deserve a good home to be in for the rest of their life.
If you can't find a home where cats are allowed you could either
1. find a family member who would take them in.
2. keep them anyways (i've had to hide 5 cats from a landlord even though i was renting a HOUSE, i did that successfuly for 3 years until i moved out)
4. call around to animal shelters and find someone who will foster them.
I would hide them before i found them new homes :)
good luck hun and VERY sorry to hear about your husband. Thoughts and prayers go out to you.

The idea of taking them to a friend or relative for a few days is a good one to see if you feel you can do without them, killing them just because you can't keep them any more is just too sad to contemplate. Put an ad in the paper stating there are two 13 year old cats that are free to a good home, most papers wont charge for a free ad, and the cats can live a natural life, if without their original owner.

Do not put them to sleep for no reason!!! I know 13 seems old for a cat but mine lived until almost 20 years old. Try not to do a shelter. Try a hummane society or a place like Friend Of Cats (they are a place by me that takes in cats of all ages. even has a retirement area for older cats like yours).
You can even try friends or ask your friends or family if they know anyone that can take them in.

Putting an animal down is only acceptable when the animal is suffering from a deadly disease. Not when you just want to get rid of them, especially if you love them as you say. A pet is a life-long commitment. You will gop somewhere yourself, I don't see why teh cats can't come with you. If they really can't, do everything possible to find new homes for them, or foster homes until you can get them to your new house!

If you don't have any friends that can take the cats, try looking for a small, local, cageless cat-specific shelter. A shelter might let you visit your kitties (at least unless someone else adopts them) especially if you help with taking care of them all -- they're always looking for volunteers.

If you don't have any friends or family that will take them, put an ad on "craigslist.com" someone in your area will adopt them, explain the situation and people will help.

So sorry to hear about your husband.
You SHOUDLN'T put your cats to sleep.
If you think that you can kinda keep your cats, keep them because they mean so much to you.
If you can't, donate them to the RSPCA.
DO NOT PUT THEM TO SLEEP!
ps: I think you should keep them but do what you think is best. ;)
