Most likely, it is cost and scheduled retirement. If you look at Air Canada's fleet, they are moving to an all Airbus fleet for aircraft with a passenger capacity greater than 100.

Probably their 747
are aging and are due for heavy maintenance. It would make more sense to put the money into newer aircraft,

much like when a person decides to buy a new car rather than put a lot of money into maintenance of an older car.

Several years ago, South African Airlines did the same thing. Their 747's were 35 years old.

Maintenance costs.

They also decided to migrate to Airbus aircraft and introduce the 777 into their fleet. The 747's were getting old, had 4 engines that don't have the fuel efficiency of the 777 or the A340, and cost more to maintain.
