Well, some in Australia since Shabbos has started there... But for most it hasn't started yet (it is from sunset to tsunset- so time varies around the world)- in Johannesburg it only starts at 17:18- so I have about another 7 hours before I go off for shabbos.

Edit: A lot of people seem to wonder why using the internet would not be allowe don Shabbos.

the law for shabbos says 'Lo taaseh kol melacha" Do not do any melacha. what is melacha? It is not work- that is "avodah". What melacha is, is creative work- work that has a creative output, much as God's creation of the world was a creative output. Melacha is divided into 39 categories called the "Av melachas" literally "father melachas." These have sub-categories of activities that have a similar outcome to the Av melachah, but are done in a different way- these are the "toldos". Beyond the toldos, you have "gezeirot"- these are Rabbinical ordinances that prevent us engaging in behaviour that would lead to us being in violation of either a toldos or av melacha.

With that background out the way- using any electronic appliance is considered to be in vioation of the Av Malachah of "boneh"- building, since the pressing of a key (such as on a keyboard), completes the circuit- thus building it. Another Av melachah it violates is "makeh b'patish"- the final hammer blow- in other words, completing something- in the case of the computer this is violated multiple times, every keystroke, pressing of a mouse utton etc.

Point of information: The Sabbath is Saturday -- or specifically, from sundown Friday from Saturday night stars come out. Why?
1. Look at the first chapter of Genesis; each day is from evening then through the daylight. The day doesn't begin at midnight (no clocks then!), and not at dawn, but at sunset.
2. The Sabbath -- the seventh day -- isn't Sunday, or Friday, but Saturday -- from Friday sunset to after sunset Saturday. Other languages show this -- Hebrew calls the Saturday "the seventh data" and "the Sabbath." Russian calls Wednesday the middle day, so the week is from Sunday through Saturday. German also shows this. No doubt other languages show this too, but I don't know not dozens or hundreds of others!

Right now in Israel it's not the Sabbath yet. That happens at sundown, duh. Religious jews take the Sabbath VERY very seriously, while Christians and "non-believing" jews could care less. Why else do you think Christians would move their sabbath from friday(sundown) to Sunday? Because it didn't matter to them to begin with.
Here in Israel there are even special elevators, machinery and air conditioners that are programmed not to interfere with the Sabbath, and to function by themselves (you can't press buttons or WORK something on the Sabbath, but it doesn't mean you can't have the air conditioning already working). You need to read up a bit on the Sabbath to understand what it fully entails.

The Jewish Sabbath begins 18 minutes before sundown on Friday evening. In most parts of the world it is too early to be considered the Sabbath...

What a foolish question!

What in the world does the internet have to do with the Sabbath? Can one not rest and relax on the internet?

Christians do not have to follow the sabbath since they are not Jewish. Sabbath is Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown

The Sabbath is part of the Old Covenant before Christ Jesus came about, so the Sabbath doesn't apply to true Christians.

Right Now? 1) Where I live, this is Friday. 2) I'm in the Religion and Spirituality section, for God's sake!
