Wow same in Portland too. Liability and eco-safety as well was what the guy pumping the gas said.

Oregon doesn't either. Maybe the gas station attendant's union is too powerful in Jersey. Maybe the government doesn't think people in those 2 states are smart enough to handle the complexity of operating today's high tech gas pumps?

I honestly don't know.

From what I know, there was a lawsuit many years ago that tried to make a gas station liable for some error or accident. (I'm not sure exactly what occurred, but you could probably find more info on the web). So, instead of letting that happen again, they made it so no one could pump their own gas.

I would not say it is about money, because gas is actually much cheaper in NJ than neighboring states like PA and DE.....usually by $0.07 - $0.15. (I live in PA about 5 min from NJ)

New Jersey passed the law making it illegal to pump your own gas in 1949. At the time, legislators felt it was too dangerous to have untrained people dispensing such a flammable liquid.

I always thought the law was to preserve jobs.

I was unaware of such a thing, but if it's true, I'd probably guess it's a liability thing...

i.e., they're scared people will set the gas station, or their cars, or themselves on fire, and since they can charge more for what it is considered "full service" (they should pump the gas, check ur tire pressue, ur fluids, and wash ur windows for this) they probably charge more for it.

it's all about the dollar.

Yeah, I think originally it was a liability issue with people that couldn't do it safely, but now it's more to prevent fill-and-run, which is a problem in other states.
